CHI WR Darnell Mooney - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. San Francisco 49ers
Darnell Mooney enters the season with not much competition around him in Chicago’s WR room. He had somewhat of a breakout season last year, topping 1,000 receiving yards on an astounding 140 targets. Based on Chicago’s current landscape, we’d expect Mooney to continue to see a ton of targets this season. That includes his Week 1 opponent against the 49ers, who were a decent matchup against WRs a season ago. When Mooney faced San Francisco last season he finished 6-64 on nine targets, which is a solid outing for half or full PPR leagues. We’d expect a similar type of performance this season, making him a strong WR3 play.

CHI WR Darnell Mooney - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Darnell Mooney managed to finish with 1,055 receiving yards last season, which was 17th-best among wide receivers. It was a big step up from his rookie season as he improved in yards per reception, yards per game, and yards per target. Speaking of targets, Mooney saw 140 of them last season, which was 10th-best in the league among wide receivers. He also averaged 13.0 yards per reception, which was 9th-best among wide receivers. Mooney already took the spot of WR1 last season, but with Allen Robinson gone, and no real additions to replace him, Mooney should continue to see a ton of targets.

2022 Fantasy Downside
While Mooney took a big step up last season, it wasn’t all highlights. We mentioned he had 140 targets, which is nice, but he had a 57.9% catch percentage, which ranked 181st out of 212 eligible players. And while Robinson is gone, that may be a bad thing as teams can focus on Mooney as the Bears’ only receiving threat. Mooney also hasn’t been a strong end zone threat, scoring four receiving touchdowns in each of his two seasons. Overall, it’s not a great situation Mooney is in as the Bears had the 7th-fewest passing yards as a team a season ago. There's not much optimism that it's going to improve this year.

2022 Bottom Line
Mooney is the clear WR1 in this offense, and he should clear 1,000 yards again. He could really take a step up this season if he’s able to improve on his catch percentage from last year. Even if he sees fewer targets, it’ll be huge for him if he’s able to catch passes more efficiently. Mooney offers some decent value at his current ADP as the 30th WR off the board. He has high-end WR2 potential if Justin Fields is able to take a step up, and if Mooney improves his catch percentage. Mooney should be viewed around the WR25 range heading into 2022.

CHI WR Darnell Mooney - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. New York Giants

Darnell Mooney had another five-reception game last week. Mooney has played in 15 games, and in eight of those games he's finished with exactly five receptions. It's even weirder when you shorten the time frame as Mooney has five games with exactly five receptions in his last six games. The yardage is all over the place in those games, though, as he has three 100-yard games with five receptions and two games below 30 receiving yards with five receptions. Long story short, you can likely expect around five receptions from Mooney again this week as he faces the Giants. New York has given up the 7th-most receptions to wide receivers this year. Although with Allen Robinson's return, some of those targets may go elsewhere this week. Mooney should be viewed as a WR3 as he heads into Week 17.

CHI WR Darnell Mooney - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Seattle Seahawks

Darnell Mooney played well with Allen Robinson out of the lineup, finishing 5-63 on seven targets. It's his ninth game this season with at least five receptions, although the yards haven't always been there. Mooney has three games of 120+ receiving yards, but in the 11 other games, he's averaged under 40 receiving yards. He's set to have a lower production game this week as he gets a tough matchup vs. the Seahawks, and Robinson is expected to rejoin the team. We have Mooney projected around the WR3 range heading into Week 16.

CHI WR Darnell Mooney - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Minnesota Vikings

Darnell Mooney had as many tackles as receptions last week: one. Mooney finished with just one reception for 19 yards off of five targets. Mooney has had some strong games this season, but he's also had plenty of duds, with six games below 40 receiving yards (and one more with 41). While Mooney has had some duds, he's mostly found success with Allen Robinson out of the lineup, which will likely be the case this week as A-Rob has been placed on the COVID list. In addition, Mooney faces a favorable Vikings defense as Minnesota has given up the most fantasy points to opposing wide receivers this season. Mooney can be viewed as a lower-end WR2 or a strong WR3 play in Week 15.

CHI WR Darnell Mooney - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 @ Green Bay Packers

The Bears really spread the ball around last week as five players saw at least seven targets. Mooney was among them, but he wasn't overly productive with a 5-27-0 game. It was a letdown game after Mooney had put up back-to-back 100-yard efforts in the two games prior. But the good news is his seven targets and five receptions mean he's still a top option in this offense, especially with Allen Robinson sidelined. However, it does appear as if Robinson will return this week, but Mooney was playing well with A-Rob active as well. Mooney might take a slight hit with Robinson's return, but he's still a decent WR3 play in Week 14. Mooney will face the Packers, a team he played well against earlier in the year with a 5-45-1 stat line.

CHI WR Darnell Mooney - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Arizona Cardinals

Darnell Mooney has excelled in Allen Robinson's absence, putting up back-to-back 100-yard games the last two weeks. In fact, he's had nearly identical stat lines the past two weeks, finishing 5-121 and 5-123. He faces an interesting matchup against the Cardinals this week. Arizona has allowed the fourth-fewest receiving yards to WRs this year, but has allowed the seventh-most touchdowns. Overall, Arizona is a tough matchup for wideouts, but with Robinson likely missing another week, we'd expect Mooney to see plenty of targets again. He may not be able to extend his 100-yard streak, but Mooney should still be viewed as a solid WR2 play in Week 13.
