Titans RB David Cobb to debut tonight, will 'mix in'

Titans promising rookie RB David Cobb (IR/to return) will make his debut tonight, I’m told. Antonio Andrews will start, Cobb will mix in.

Fantasy Impact: 

The Jaguars have been surprisingly stingy against the run, allowing just 3.3 YPC on the season. But they've given up eight rushing touchdowns in nine games, so there's a chance that Andrews or Cobb hits pay dirt tonight. We're not expecting more than 6-8 carries for Cobb in his first game back, but the team may have decided that it has seen enough of Andrews.

The Titans announced that rookie running back David Cobb was activated off IR boomerang and added to the 53-man roster.

Practicing since last month, Cobb should see immediate snaps inside a backfield that has leaned hard on Antonio Andrews and Dexter McCluster ahead of Bishop Sankey.

Cobb showed flashes in the preseason as a hard-charging back who sheds tackles. The question today is whether he's in football shape and seen as a viable contributor. With the Titans clinging to life in the awful AFC South, Cobb's return still has meaning.

Fantasy Impact: 

After a strong showing against the Saints, we expect Andrews to hold down RB1 duties for at least one more week. But Cobb's return certainly takes some wind out of his sails.

The Titans rank 16th in the NFL with 107.6 rushing yards a game. That’s up from 90.4 in 2014.

That’s a nice improvement, but it doesn’t warrant the continued support of the running back committee from Ken Whisenhunt.

Let’s face it, the Titans are using a committee, not because they they want to but because they have to. Few backs are absolute bell-cows anymore.

But certainly a foundational back demands more than 29 percent, which is the share of the load Titans leading rusher Bishop Sankey has gotten.

Perhaps game to game the Titans can put a different back at the head of the line. Perhaps once David Cobb returns from IR/designated to return in a few weeks they will be adding a better option.

It’s time to give the top back on a given Sunday closer to 20 carries than 10.

Fantasy Impact: 

Terrance West had 13 carries back in Week 1 and that was the most any back has got in a game this year the story said.

The Titans announced that rookie running back David Cobb was placed on injured reserve/designated to return. Cobb, a fifth-round pick, flashed playmaking ability early in preseason -- 79 yards on 19 carries -- but missed the final two contests with a calf injury.

Fantasy Impact: 

Cobb will be eligible to return to game action after eight games. Meanwhile, the team traded for Terrance West from Cleveland, who will join Bishop Sankey and pass-catching back Dexter McCluster in the Titans' backfield, in what seems to be a running back-by-committee approach.
