The Carolina Panthers know they're going into this week's game without their big dog, but wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert said Thursday he's not intimidated by playing his "puppies" either.

With star wideout Steve Smith expected to miss several weeks with a high ankle sprain, the Panthers are down to Tuesday pickup David Clowney and three rookies: David Gettis, Brandon LaFell and Armanti Edwards.

There hasn't been a rookie quarterback to start with two rookie wideouts since 1999, but Tolbert said he's encouraged enough by the progress of his young corps to think they're capable of good things.

Panthers Steve L Smith carted off with ankle injury

The Panthers lost star WR Steve L Smith to an ankle injury Sunday against the Saints, and his return is questionable.

Smith was injured when his left foot was caught underneath a defender at the end of a 5-yard reception.

Smith had to cross the field to get back to the Panthers’ sideline, and he limped severely while walking under his own power. Trainers removed Smith’s left cleat on the training table and appeared to check his foot and ankle before the receiver was carted off the sideline.

Brandon LeFell and David Gettis opened the following drive at receiver for the Panthers.

The Dwayne Jarrett era appears to be drawing to a close, as the Panthers activated two rookies instead of the former second-rounder, who came to camp as the unquestioned starter at receiver.

Jarrett was one of the team’s eight pregame inactives. He had already been passed for a starting job by both third-rounder Brandon LaFell and sixth-rounder David Gettis the first two weeks. When LaFell came back from the hamstring strain that had him inactive last week against Tampa Bay (when Jarrett was active but not thrown to), there was no apparent need for him.

Panthers WR Brandon LaFell (hamstring probable) took limited reps Friday and may play Sunday, but expect a rotation with Dwayne Jarrett and now David Gettis. Not a promising fantasy situation.
