ARI RB David Johnson - 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
The Cardinals coaching staff knew it had a strong engine in the garage, but it wasn't until Chris Johnson suffered a season-ending injury in December that the NFL world got to see the full abilities of David Johnson. Johnson saw limited carries through the first 11 games, with his biggest impact coming as a receiver out of the backfield. But once Chris Johnson went down, David Johnson took the reins and was one of the league's most productive backs over the final five games of the regular season, amassing 658 yards from scrimmage (131.6 per game) along with five touchdowns. Of his 581 yards, 442 came in the final five games of the 2015 season. He also added 216 receiving yards over that five-game span.

Fantasy Downside
The Cardinals have three RBs who, when healthy, are capable of starting. Combining second-year stud Johnson, the return of Chris Johnson and a healthy Andre Ellington, HC Bruce Arians has a capable stable of running backs.

2016 Bottom Line
Still, after David Johnson's explosion down the stretch last season, it's clear he'll be the first back to carry the workload. "David's earned the right now to be the bell cow," Arians said. As NFL.com's Chris Wesseling notes, the 24-year-old second-year back has rare skills to be a between-the-tackles runner, speed to get to the edge, vision on the second level and is very good in the passing game. Considering all that, and his anticipated workhorse role, David Johnson will likely cost you a first-round investment come draft day.

ARI RB David Johnson - Week 20, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

NFC Championship at Carolina

David Johnson only had 35 yards on the ground last week against the Packers, but he added six receptions and 43 yards through the air to his totals, solidifying him as a solid fantasy option. Johnson got another full workload and is the clear starter on the team with Chris Johnson still injured and Andre Ellington delegated to a reserve role.

This week, Johnson should get another full workload against Carolina. While the Panthers were fourth in the league this year in rushing yards allowed, they were only average keeping opposing rushers out of the end zone. Teams scored a total of 11 rushing touchdowns against them this season, tied for 17th in the league. Johnson is one of only two backs this week practically guaranteed to receive a full workload, which makes him an elite fantasy option in all league formats.

ARI RB David Johnson - Week 19, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 19 vs. Green Bay

David Johnson struggled with the rest of the Cardinal offense in the last game of the season against Seattle, but that was a game that didn’t really matter for Arizona and he only had 11 carries on the day. Now that the playoffs are here, Johnson should get a full workload and continue his stellar rookie year.

Johnson faces a Green Bay defense that is tied for 26th in the league in allowing 4.5 yards per carry to opposing rushers and is in the bottom half of the league in both yards and touchdowns allowed on the ground. Johnson should thrive at home in this key playoff matchup before facing a tougher task (should Arizona win) against the Panthers or Seahawks in the conference championship. Fantasy owners should take advantage of the matchup now and put Johnson in their lineups this week as the top fantasy option at the running back position.

ARI RB David Johnson - Week 17, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Seattle

David Johnson had another nice game last week against the Packers. While he only carried the ball nine times for 39 yards, he managed to score a touchdown and was electric in the passing game. He caught three of the six passes thrown his way and gained 88 yards receiving on the day.

Johnson’s lack of workload was mostly related to the Cardinals completely dominating the Packers on the scoreboard. By the end of the game, Johnson was being rested for Kerwynn Williams. This week, it’s doubtful that Seattle will be so little of a challenge for the Cardinal offense and Johnson should get a full workload. Despite the tough matchup against Seattle’s #3 ranked run defense, Johnson is a strong fantasy option in all league formats. He should be a solid RB1 as he gets a full workload and the Cardinals fight for home-field advantage.

ARI RB David Johnson - Week 16, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Green Bay

David Johnson blew up last week against the Eagles. He carried the ball 29 times for 187 yards on the ground and three touchdowns. He also caught four balls for 42 yards and single-handedly won and destroyed fantasy seasons. Johnson is a big, physical runner who already looks like the long-term solution at the position for Arizona.

This week, expect the Cardinals to lean on their rookie back once again. The Packers rank 22nd in the league in rushing yards allowed, and are tied for 23rd with 11 touchdowns given up on the ground. Johnson should be in for another great day in a must-win situation for the Cardinals and he should be active as a top-5 fantasy option in all leagues.

ARI RB David Johnson - Week 15, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Philadelphia

David Johnson had another nice game as the starter in Arizona, putting up 123 total yards from scrimmage on 19 carries and five receptions. The Cardinals ended up with a big win against the Vikings, extending their record to 11-2, and the versatile Johnson is a big reason why the offense hasn’t missed a beat since Chris Johnson went out with an injury a couple weeks ago.

This week, the rookie will face a Philadelphia defense that has been horrible this year. Only the Saints have given up more passing touchdowns, and they rank in the bottom five in the league in rushing yards allowed. While they’ve only allowed six rushing touchdowns, Johnson should have no problem putting up great RB2 numbers once again and should be active in all leagues.

ARI RB David Johnson - Week 14, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Minnesota

David Johnson had a nice coming out party in his first NFL start. He led the Cardinals with 22 carries, finishing with 99 yards on the ground and adding 21 yards and a touchdown on two receptions. He was unquestionably the lead back against the Rams and should be poised for continued work in a starring role while Chris Johnson is out at least until playoff time.

This week, Johnson faces a Vikings defense that has only allowed seven rushing touchdowns this year, but is allowing over 115 yards per game to opposing rushers. The team has had some injury issues on the defensive side of the ball, and they were torched by Thomas Rawls and the Seattle offense last week. Expect another full workload from Johnson, and solid RB2 numbers on Thursday night.
