The Saints are short on tailbacks, especially if Pierre Thomas is sidelined with an ankle injury. If Thomas is out, the Saints will have to go with Chris Ivory, Ladell Betts and possibly DeShawn Wynn, who was just activated. Look for the Saints to alter their defensive strategy and come after Jimmy Clausen as they came after Brett Favre on opening night. They didn’t pressure Atlanta’s Matt Ryan enough last week, but will look to rattle the rookie. Clausen has completed just 47.9 percent of his passes and has no touchdowns and two interceptions.

Saints Promote RB DeShawn Wynn from Practice Squad

Running back DeShawn Wynn is being promoted to the New Orleans Saints' active roster.

Pierre Thomas is questionable with an ankle injury, so the Saints needed to add some depth behind him to work in behind Chris Ivory and Ladell Betts.

Wynn was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round of the 2007 NFL draft after playing collegiately at Florida.

Wynn rushed for 2,077 yards and 25 touchdowns at Florida, but battled injuries with the Packers.

He finished his rookie season with 203 yards and four touchdowns, but finished the year on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

In 2008, the 5-foot-10, 232-pounder rushed for 110 yards on eight carries. That included a 73-yard touchdown run against the Detroit Lions.

In four games last season, Wynn rushed for 19 yards on six carries.

Fantasy Impact: 

This could be interpreted as a bad sign for the availability of Pierre Thomas this weekend. Wynn isn't worth claiming off the waiver wire, as young Chris Ivory and veteran Ladell Betts will probably do most of the running if Thomas is out.

Saints RB Pierre Thomas did not practice with a left ankle injury. But Thomas has not been ruled out of Sunday's game at Carolina. Payton wants to see how he progresses as the week goes on. Backup Chris Ivory fully practiced on Wednesday as he continues to recover from a knee injury. He and veteran Ladell Betts could pick up extra carries if Thomas can't play. DeShawn Wynn could also be activated from the practice squad.

Judging from how McCarthy addressed it, there appears to be a good chance running back Ahman Green will be active this week.

Green, who was signed last week to replace injured Deshawn Wynn, hasn't had full contact since November, but McCarthy thinks he can help the team in third-down situations and in relief of starter Ryan Grant.

"We're looking at Ahman as far as contributing," McCarthy said. "He'll potentially have an opportunity to be up. We have some injury situations that we're working through. But I like what I've seen so far from Ahman.

"Once again, he wasn't here for training camp. Things have changed in the offense since our time together in the past. We're just trying to work him through that."
