Scouting report

ATL WR Devin Hester - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2: Hester vs. Bengals
Devin Hester turned his impressive preseason into a solid Week 1 performance, catching five passes for 99 yards in the Falcons' 37-34 victory over the Saints. Hester once again flashed his speed and playmaking ability while average 19.8 yards per catch. He also came up with a crucial reception to set up Matt Bryant's game-tying field goal to force overtime. That said, the injury to LT Jake Matthews could limit the Falcons' use of four-receiver sets because the offensive line will be relying on backup Gabe Carimi to protect Matt Ryan's blindside. Plus, even if the Falcons spread teams out on a regular basis, Hester remains behind Julio Jones, Roddy White and Harry Douglas for targets. Leave him on your waiver wire for now, but monitor Hester's play throughout the season. He's our No. 100 WR for Week 2.

ATL WR Devin Hester - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1: Hester vs. Saints
Devin Hester piqued fantasy owners' interest this preseason when he scored two touchdowns and flashed his trademark playmaking ability. But he's buried on the Falcons' depth chart behind Julio Jones, Roddy White and Harry Douglas, and will remain a bit player in Dirk Koetter's offense. Until there's an injury, leave Hester on your waiver wire or risk wasting a roster spot.

ATL WR Devin Hester - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Even though he was signed primarily to be the team's kick returner, the Falcons have gotten Hester into the mix as a receiver in preseason (he even caught a TD in a Week 2 loss vs. Houston). A year ago Chicago relegated Hester to returner status only, but that doesn't appear to be the case in Atlanta. If Julio Jones, Roddy White or Harry Douglas were to suffer an injury, Hester could see some opportunities in the receiving game.

Fantasy Downside
Hester is currently blocked by Jones, White and Douglas on the depth chart and even if one of those players were to get hurt, he'd still be third or fourth in line for targets. He has some big play ability left in the tank but the thought of him being a consistent receiving option has long passed.

Bottom Line
While OC Dirk Koetter may use him as a gimmick from time to time, Hester doesn't have much fantasy upside. It would have to take significant injuries to two receivers ahead of him on the depth chart for him to hold any fantasy relevance and even then his opportunities would likely be limited. Avoid him on draft day.
