PIT WR Diontae Johnson - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. New York Jets
Diontae Johnson has been consistent from the standpoint he has double-digit targets in each of the first three games. But no breakout games yet for the Steelers No. 1 receiver. Last week, he did have a season-high eight receptions for 85 yards which is a good sign.

Johnson will face the Jets who are ranked 24th in aFPA to wide receivers. The Steelers offense has not been good as a whole although QB Mitch Trubisky has played good enough to keep the QB job.

Start Johnson as a solid WR2 for Week 4. As long as the targets keep coming and he avoids drops which have been an issue with him the past, he will fulfill your expectations in this role and help your fantasy team.

PIT WR Diontae Johnson - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Cleveland Browns
Diontae Johnson has earned the new contract he signed in the offseason, going off the first two weeks. He has 22 targets which has produced 13 receptions. Where his stock has taken a hit is he only has 122 receiving yards. However, he isn't the problem. The Steelers' offense refuses to throw downfield and they have only scored two offensive touchdowns in two games. Unless Pittsburgh changes their philosophy, Johnson will reach his ceiling.

The Steelers face the Browns on Thursday night. Cleveland ranks 10th in aFPA to wide receivers so an ineffective offense going against an above-average defense doesn't bode well for Pittsburgh. Johnson had mixed results in the two meetings with the Browns last season but did have a combined 26 targets.

Johnson ranks a low-end WR2 for Week 3. The targets are encouraging and should continue, but there is plenty of doubt in the Pittsburgh quarterback and offensive coordinator positions.

PIT WR Diontae Johnson - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. New England Patriots
Even though Diontae Johnson made the catch of the week, his numbers were pedestrian with the exception of one main state. Targets. QB Mitch Trubisky showed that Johnson will remain the No.1 receiver with 12 targets and even though he only had 7 receptions for 55 yards, it is a good sign for Johnson's owners.

The Steelers face the Patriots, who have a good pass defense. Coach Bill Belichick could try to take away Johnson so keep that in mind.

Johnson should start as a low-end WR2 for Week 2. There are still a lot of questions about the Steelers offense which takes down his fantasy stock.

PIT WR Diontae Johnson - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Cincinnati Bengals
Diontae Johnson was limited in practice on Wednesday so there is some question if he will suit up for Week 1 against the Bengals. Plenty of questions around the Steelers offense and QB situation, but there is little doubt that Johnson can be a legit fantasy receiver. He received a new contract and will be Pittsburgh's No. 1 target in the passing game.

Johnson will face Cincinnati who ranked 20th in aFPA to wide receivers last season. He only played in 1 of the 2 meetings last season but was targeted 14 times for 9 catches for 95 yards. He was actually received double-digit targets 12 times during the 2021 campaign.

We have to watch the injury report on this one. If Johnson plays, he won't be 100%, but will still be the best fantasy receiver option for the Steelers. Expect around 6 receptions for 75 yards. If he is out, Chase Claypool and George Pickens get elevated in the rankings although neither is probably available on the waiver wire.

PIT WR Diontae Johnson - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Diontae Johnson developed into the No. 1 target for the Steelers last season. His numbers have risen every year with career-highs in targets (169), receptions (107), receiving yards (1,161 yards) and touchdowns (8). Johnson is able to play on the outside and in the slot. Pittsburgh will continue to utilize three receivers sets with whomever is the new quarterback so the passing game will be used at a similar rate as 2021.

2022 Fantasy Downside
Johnson wants a new contract and wants to be paid as a NFL No. 1 receiver, but it's questionable if the Steelers view him that way. He could be a hold-out during training camp and although this doesn't happen in Pittsburgh often, he could threaten them with holding out to start the regular season. One thing to note about his numbers is they don't blow you away. He only had three 100+ yard games and never eclipsed the 105-yard mark last season. The quarterback play also is a question mark although it actually could be upgraded from Ben Roethlisberger.

2022 Bottom Line
Johnson is the Steelers No. 1 receiver, but when it comes to fantasy he is a high-end WR2 heading into the season. He is on track for 90 receptions and over 1,000 yards again. But there are some question marks with the Steelers and the offense. He should go in the 4th round which is probably on the mark.

PIT WR Diontae Johnson - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs Browns

Tough matchup against the Chiefs? No problem for Diontae Johnson, who still posted 15 points in PPR scoring last week with six more catches and a touchdown. He's at 92 catches for the season. You can bet he'll do all he can for the Steelers this week in what is both a likely elimination game and very possibly the last game at Heinz Field for Ben Roethlisberger. Start Johnson this week. He had six catches for 98 yards in Week 8 in Cleveland.

PIT WR Diontae Johnson - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs Chiefs

Even in a quiet day for the Steelers' offense, Diontae Johnson still managed five catches. When that's a low total, you're having a good season. It did snap his streak of double-digit PPR point days at 12. In fact, it was the first time this season he failed to hit ten points in PPR in a game he actually played. He'll be back, even in a tough matchup with the Chiefs. He's our No. 6 WR this week.
