CLE RB Duke Johnson - Week 13, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Cincinnati

Duke Johnson has not been lighting it up lately. The rookie out of Miami rushed seven times for 27 yards and caught five passes for 23 yards in Cleveland’s 33-27 loss to Baltimore on Monday night.

But while Johnson has not been dynamic, backfield mate Isaiah Crowell has been far worse. Johnson saw more work than Crowell against the Ravens and caught a touchdown pass when Cleveland lost to Cincinnati in Week 9. If the Browns fall behind against the Bengals, which is a realistic scenario, Johnson could catch a fair amount of passes. Standard league owners should probably steer clear of the Duke, as the Bengals have given up just four rushing touchdowns, but PPR owners can use Johnson as a flex if needed.

CLE RB Duke Johnson - Week 12, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs Baltimore

If Duke Johnson is not delivering the goods as a receiver, he is not helping fantasy teams. The Browns have been giving Isaiah Crowell the most work as a runner despite the fact he has been largely ineffective. In Week 10 before the Browns had an off week, Johnson had just four carries while catching four passes for 18 yards.

Johnson posted six receptions for 55 yards when Cleveland played Baltimore in Week 5, so there is some hope he could fare well against a demoralized and injury-ravaged Ravens squad. Unfortunately, it is far from a guarantee, making Johnson no more than a low-end flex in PPR leagues and bench fodder in standard formats.

CLE RB Duke Johnson - Week 10, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 at Pittsburgh

Before Cleveland’s Week 9 clash with Cincinnati, the Browns brass admitted they needed to get Duke Johnson more touches. As is often the case with this clueless group, they were unable to accomplish their goal. However, Johnson still did something with his limited looks, as he caught a 12-yard touchdown pass for Cleveland’s only score in a 31-10 rout.

Johnson has clearly proven himself to be a playmaker in the passing game. He has been unable to get much going as a runner, but that is a further byproduct of the coaching staff as the Duke had just three carries against the Bengals. The story this weekend should be the same as it has been for most of the year. Johnson is a decent RB2/flex in PPR leagues while carrying a much greater degree of risk in other formats.

CLE RB Duke Johnson - Week 9, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 at Cincinnati

After catching a 52-yard pass in the first half of Cleveland’s 34-20 loss to Arizona, Cleveland’s inept coaching staff pretty much decided Duke Johnson had done enough for the day despite the fact the Duke is clearly the best running back on the Browns roster. It is absurd Johnson received just three touches on an afternoon where Isaiah Crowell and Robert Turbin combined for 29 total yards.

Cleveland head coach Mike Pettine, who embraces baffling running back rotations, has seemingly realized Johnson needs more touches. That is encouraging, although Pettine is far from trustworthy. Nevertheless, when a player is not utilized properly, efforts are usually made to get them more involved. And with the Browns likely to be overmatched against the undefeated Bengals, the scene is set for Johnson to see a lot of playing time as he plays most often in passing situations. He can certainly be started as a flex, especially in PPR leagues.

CLE RB Duke Johnson - Week 8, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs. Arizona
Although Browns head coach Mike Pettine has done everything in his power to create a backfield quagmire, Duke Johnson has emerged as the safest bet of all the backs on the Cleveland roster, especially in PPR leagues. Johnson rushed for only 17 yards in Week 7, but caught seven passes for 73 yards. He caught nine passes in a game earlier this season.

And he will probably rack up more receptions against the Cardinals, with the Browns likely to be trailing throughout the afternoon. Arizona’s ability to stop the run is more of an issue for Isaiah Crowell and Robert Turbin. Johnson is an RB2 in PPR and a flex in standard formats.

CLE RB Duke Johnson - Week 7, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at St. Louis

Duke Johnson was the leading rusher for the Browns in Week 6. That sounds nice on paper, but Johnson rushed for only 38 yards and received less carries than Isaiah Crowell and Robert Turbin. Additionally, the Duke caught three passes for 18 yards.

Nonetheless, as the best receiver among Cleveland’s backs, Johnson offers the most fantasy stability. He will try to get the better of a balanced and strong St. Louis defense that has allowed only three rushing touchdowns and five through the air. While it is not a favorable draw for the Duke, his pass catching role makes him a starter in PPR leagues and a flex candidate in other formats.

CLE RB Duke Johnson - Week 6, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs Denver

After catching nine passes for 85 yards and a touchdown in Week 4, expectations were high for Duke Johnson heading into last Sunday’s showdown with Baltimore. Johnson was unable to live up to those high standards, rushing for 22 yards on nine carries, but he did finish with six receptions for 55 yards. Johnson has settled in as a PPR specialist in Cleveland’s offense.

The problem for Johnson this week is the Broncos are one of the best defenses in the NFL and are capable of shutting down all facets of Cleveland’s attack. It will be tough for Johnson and backfield mate Isaiah Crowell to get anything going on the ground or through the air. Although Duke should still be started in PPR leagues since the Browns will likely be playing from behind, he is going to be a risky flex option in most formats.
