After more than three hours of dreadful offensive football, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan sought out Carolina coach John Fox at midfield, happy the final gun had sounded to signal the end of a night of punts and turnovers.

"I told John Fox it looked like a pillow fight out there with both offenses struggling like that, to say the least,'' Ryan said. "You're going to have days like that."

Mark Sanchez and Matt Moore hope there aren't many more, after nearly equally poor quarterback performances in the Jets' touchdown-less, 9-3 victory over the Panthers on Saturday night.

Sanchez was lucky to avoid two interceptions and failed to get the Jets in the end zone despite great field position. Moore couldn't lead Carolina to any points on a night of bad passes, drops and penalties.

Sanchez completed five of 10 passes for 12 yards, a setback after he recovered from an interception on his first pass Monday against the Giants and looked sharp. LaDainian Tomlinson 's 20-yard draw play was the Jets' top offensive play.

The Panthers couldn't even come close to matching that - which is why they lost despite allowing only 112 yards.

Moore, given the starting job when seven-year starter Jake Delhomme was released in the offseason, failed to lead a scoring drive for the second straight preseason game. He completed just six of 17 passes for 57 yards and an interception.

Rookie Jimmy Clausen wasn't much better, going 9 of 22 for 72 yards and a pick, and neither got much help. Carolina played without star receiver Steve Smith (broken arm) and the unheralded stable of receivers behind him did nothing to quell concerns Smith will be the Panthers' only option.

Moore badly overthrew rookie Brandon LaFell on a deep pass on Carolina's opening possession and safety Jim Leonhard swooped in for the interception. Leonhard came in unblocked and sacked Moore the second time the Panthers had the ball.

LaFell, a third-round pick, had trouble holding onto passes after getting hit. Kenny Moore had some drops, while Dwayne Jarrett struggled to get open.

Kellen Clemens got the most time at quarterback after Sanchez, finishing 4 of 6 for 32 yards. Veteran Mark Brunell was 3 of 7 for 2 yards.

The Carolina Panthers have been looking for options at wide receiver all camp, but now they're looking at them in a slightly different order.

Wallace Wright and Brandon LaFell worked with the starters through the team periods Monday morning, their most extensive work as a tandem.

Thus far, the Panthers have used Kenny Moore and Dwayne Jarrett with the first team - and will likely continue to later - as they try to make a decision on whom to start when Steve Smith returns from a broken arm.

Attention dynasty league owners, Brandon LaFell looks to be the real deal.

WIDE RECEIVERS: Starters – Steve Smith, Brandon LaFell. Backups – Dwayne Jarrett, Armanti Edwards, Wallace Wright, Charly Martin, Kenneth Moore, David Gettis. Others – Trent Guy, Dexter Jackson, Oliver Young.

Keep Jarrett’s name in pencil because although he’s working with the starters right now, he could easily be released before the start of the season if he doesn’t start producing. Now entering his fourth season, Jarrett has only appeared in 29 games and caught just 33 passes with one touchdown.

The Panthers need someone to step up and take pressure off Smith, which is why they drafted LaFell and Edwards in the third round. LaFell is Jarrett’s primary competition for the No. 2 spot opposite Smith. He has the ability to make plays downfield and is a decent blocker. It also helps that new receivers coach Tyke Tolbert is a former LSU graduate and pushed for the team to draft LaFell.

Edwards is a project. He played quarterback for Appalachian State, but the Panthers plan to make him a receiver and returner, although he could see some action in the Wildcat as well. Edwards is fast and has surprisingly good hands, but you have to wonder if his smallish frame will hold up.

Smith will miss most of training camp with a broken arm he sustained playing flag football but he should be ready for the season. Wright will make the roster because of his special teams ability but hopes to play some receiver. Martin, Moore and Gettis, a late-round draft pick, will battle for the fifth receiver spot. Gettis has great straightaway speed (think Drew Carter here). LEAGUE RANKING: 27th out of 32 teams.

Fantasy Impact:

LaFell may eventually have some value as the WR2 in Carolina, although young receivers don't tend to produce fantasy-wise right away. He could be someone to watch out for as the season moves along, though. Currently he just barely cracks 4for4's top-100 WRs [number-99] but doesn't have an ADP.

Rock Hill Herald's Darin Gantt believes the Panthers' starting WR job opposite of Steve Smith is Dwayne Jarrett's to lose.....or "until he coughs it up."

Interesting speculation from Gantt. Clearly, this is a make of break year for Dwayne Jarrett.
