SD WR Eddie Royal - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 - Royal vs. Buffalo
Eddie Royal had a nice game last week with seven catches for 69 yards on 10 targets vs. the Seahawks.

Royal is never really a safe play based on inconsistent numbers week-to-week. As difficult as last week's matchup was vs. Seattle, this week's is a pretty good one against the Bills. Buffalo ranks 32nd in allowing fantasy points to WRs, but as good of a matchup as this is, Royal is only ranked in the 70s and just isn't safe for a typical league lineup.

SD WR Eddie Royal - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Seattle
Eddie Royal had one catch for 20 yards on six targets last week. He rushed twice for -1 yard.

Royal is too up and down for fantasy lineups, and for the most part is down anyway, getting just a couple of touches per game. He'll have his standout games but for the longterm he's way too risky in typical leagues.

SD WR Eddie Royal - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs Cardinals
Eddie Royal got off to a hot start last year and just when he got to be a popular waiver wire pickup and thrown in lineups, he went back to what was expected. He's going to have up and down games but the problem will be figuring out when the good ones are. Royal is ranked 89th on our list this week and should be kept on benches in what is a not-so-great matchup against the Cards.

SD WR Eddie Royal - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Eddie Royal was reunited in 2013 with Mike McCoy, his former offensive coordinator in Denver. McCoy's arrival as head coach and his familiarity with Royal might have been what allowed the veteran wideout to contribute in games on a weekly basis despite missing considerable practice time with a chronic toe injury. In fact, Royal had a career-high eight touchdowns last season. He joined the Chargers as a free agent in 2012, ready to contribute as a slot receiver while handling the team's punt return responsibilities. But a series of setbacks hampered the beginning of his career in San Diego. He ended up missing five games in 2012.

Fantasy Downside
Health is obviously Royal's biggest battle -- although last year's toe injury only cost him one game.

Bottom Line
Keenan Allen's emergence as a leading weapon aside, Vincent Brown has been a disappointment and Malcom Floyd is returning from a serious neck injury; Royal's presence could be important again.
