The Washington Redskins used their franchise tag on tight end Fred Davis Friday according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

Davis was set to become an unrestricted free agent on March 13, but Washington prevented that by using the franchise tag on the four-year veteran.

The tag gives the Redskins the right to keep Davis by matching any offer from another team. If it is the exclusive franchise tag, he will not be able to negotiate with other teams. If it is the non-exclusive tag, which is far more common, the Redskins would receive two first-round picks from his new team if they allowed him to leave.

The Washington Redskins confirmed the suspensions of tight end Fred Davis and offensive tackle Trent Williams.

Fred Davis and Trent Williams of the Washington Redskins have been suspended without pay for the team’s next four games for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

Their suspensions begin immediately. They will be eligible to return to the Redskins’ active roster on Monday, Jan. 2 following the team’s Jan. 1 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The NFL is expected to notify Redskins left tackle Trent Williams and tight end Fred Davis that each will miss the remainder of the season after they failed multiple drug tests, under a settlement reached between the league and the NFL Players Association Saturday.

The players will be formally notified of their four-game suspensions in the next couple of days, according to two people familiar with the situation.

Because the season-ending suspensions are part of a deal, neither player would be able to appeal and neither is expected to see any more action this season.

Each player has failed at least three drug tests since entering the league, according to a league source, including two since the lockout ended in July. Davis and Williams tested positive for recreational drugs, believed to be marijuana, according to a league source familiar with the case.

Fantasy Impact: 

Logan Paulsen seems next in line to get receptions. He has just seven for 95 yards this season. The loss of Davis will be huge for fantasy owners who already saw him get 793 receiving yards with three TDs and 59 catches. According to the story, he won't be able to appeal and should be dropped on your team.
