PIT WR George Pickens - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Las Vegas Raiders

George Pickens saw a career-low snap percentage against the Cowboys that was deemed to be for "management" reasons, but it certainly seemed like the tape was not kind to Pickens and his effort in that game. Either way, Arthur Smith did not help the situation by saying, essentially, he's had superstar players before and didn't play them every snap either. Genius.

Pickens is just outside of the WR2 conversation this week and is a top-end WR3. You know, assuming he gets a full complement of snaps. The Raiders are 25th aFPA against wide receivers so it is a great matchup. While there are some obvious concerns, it seems like a matchup you just have to hope Pickens hits in.

PIT WR George Pickens - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Dallas Cowboys

George Pickens remains the alpha in Pittsburgh, and after a few slow weeks, he rebounded with 7-113-0 against the Colts. In fact, he had more catches than the rest of the other active wide receivers had targets (4).

Pickens is a borderline WR1 this week, but checks in at WR13 on the week. Dallas ranks 19th aFPA against wide receivers and Justin Fields has been on a heater through the air lately. I'd feel great about this matchup if I had George Pickens on my roster. He's a must-start.

PIT WR George Pickens - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Indianapolis Colts

On the plus side, George Pickens remains the WR1 as he led the team with 7 targets against the Chargers. On the downside, Pickens again failed to deliver a big game as he finished with 5-57-0. Things, in theory, should be easier against the Colts.

While the Colts rank 26th aFPA against receivers, Pickens is still just a WR3 this week as he comes in 25th in our rankings. Pickens is a start this week, but it's hard to trust him as more than a WR3. The improved play of Justin Fields and the easier matchup should at least raise the ceiling a bit on Pickens.

PIT WR George Pickens - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs Los Angeles Chargers

We were worried about George Pickens heading into the matchup against Pat Surtain and those fears played out just as we expected. Pickens had 2-29-0 stat line, but the underlying usage was pretty good. He drew a long penalty and had another long catch taken away. Unfortunately, almost doesn't cut it for you in fantasy.

In what should be a low-scoring game in a low-volume passing attack, Pickens is in another tough spot against the Chargers who haven't allowed a receiver to go over 61 yards so far. Pickens is a back-end WR2/high-end WR3 this week. With the low total and the low passing volume, just be aware this isn't the recipe for a ceiling week.

PIT WR George Pickens - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Denver Broncos

Denver is a tough matchup for pass catchers and it will be even tougher for Pickens this week with as little help as he gets from the rest of the receiver room. Three receivers, three tight ends and two running backs caught passes, and yet Pickens was the only one to top 30 yards. His 6 catches for 85 yards were nice, but his -10 yard run? Not so much!

Again, the matchup is pretty brutal against Denver and Pickens is normally in the WR2 conversation, but this week is closer to a back-end WR3.

PIT WR George Pickens - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 @ Atlanta Falcons
As the unquestioned WR1 in Pittsburgh, George Pickens will be counted on to carry a heavy workload as the other receivers around him saw a big downgrade with Diontae Johnson traded to Carolina. Some combination of Van Jefferson, Roman Wilson, and Calvin Austin will rotate around Pickens and that means he should be a target hog in a low-volume passing attack.

The matchup against the Falcons isn't great as he's likely to see a lot of A.J. Terrell, but even if Russell Wilson doesn't start this weekend Justin Fields has a good enough deep ball that Pickens should find ways to be fantasy relevant. I think Pickens is more of a WR3 this week, but you didn't draft him to put him on your bench.

PIT WR George Pickens - 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
It will be hard for people to ignore the parallel between Drake London last year and George Pickens this year. Before you do that, keep in mind that London finished as WR45 in points per game in half-point PPR scoring last season. That said, the runway was cleared a bit for Pickens to be the alpha in Pittsburgh. Matt Canada, Kenny Pickett, and Diontae Johnson are gone. They upgraded at quarterback with Russell Wilson, and Pickens has the perfect skill set to take advantage of what Wilson has left.

Fantasy Downside
From a personnel perspective, things look up for Pickens, but Arthur Smith has a very run-heavy scheme and has proven he won't feed alpha receivers with easy targets. There's also the problem that Wilson still throws a solid deep ball, he does struggle. It's possible Pickens is one of the few players who could improve with Fields starting over Wilson if that were to take place.

2024 Bottom Line
Pickens is going off the board as WR27 and 39th overall. While the allure of no competition in the receiver room is tempting, it is a bit of a steep price when you consider Arthur Smith and Russell Wilson's recent history. If he had his April ADP on Underdog (51.1), I'd feel a lot more comfortable clicking the button on him. He's going around there in redraft leagues which feels a lot more palatable.
