"When you look at Isaac Bruce, Josh Morgan and Michael Crabtree, they're all going to play about the same. It just depends on how the game goes and the flow of the game," coach Mike Singletary said.

Singletary was asked if he's one of the team's best three receivers or is he getting there? "He's getting there. Obviously, you see the talent there. He's going to play that much faster when he gets it," Singletary said. "He's definitely a talented guy, and once the game starts, we'll see how it goes."

Crabtree likely to start Sunday's game

There is a "strong possibility" rookie receiver Michael Crabtree will be in the starting lineup Sunday against the Houston Texans, 49ers coach Mike Singletary confirmed this afternoon.

Singletary said it is a strong possibility Crabtree will start, but he is a little hesitant about the message it would send to have Crabtree immediately surpass five receivers on the roster after missing 71 days in a contract stalemate. Singletary said he is also sensitive to how the move would affect Morgan's development.

Josh Morgan started the first five games for the 49ers at split end. But Morgan told The Press Democrat today he has been informed Crabtree and Isaac Bruce will be the 49ers' starting receivers on Sunday.

Furthermore, Morgan remained at the 49ers' practice facility over the bye week to personally help Crabtree learn the position - and, in essence, take his job. Crabtree was the No. 10 overall pick but finally signed a six-year contract with the 49ers on Oct. 7.

It's going to take time for Crabtree to learn an offense vastly different than the spread system in which he played at Texas Tech.

"It shouldn't take long," said 16-year veteran Isaac Bruce, who occupies the locker stall next to Crabtree. "He seems like a bright guy."

Coach Mike Singletary said, "It's going to be a process. Hopefully, after the bye, Mike will be ready go to. It will be a small role at first. It's going to be a work in progress. We will find ways to get him on the field."

49ers HC Mike Singletary said today that for now Josh Morgan would remain one of the starters at wide receiver, but he left open the possibility that Arnaz Battle could unseat him. Singletary said earlier in training camp that Morgan had to work on being more consistent. Today he echoed that. "He's still learning how to be a pro," he said. "At some point, the light's going to go on and he's going to take off." Asked whether Battle could overtake Morgan, Singletary said he'll "continue to watch the film and continue to look at the possibilities. But right now it is what it is." ... Left unsaid is the fact that Michael Crabtree also could replace Morgan when/if he signs. Crabtree has been earmarked for the split-end spot opposite Isaac Bruce.
