According to Kris Knox of the National Football Authority, the most intriguing running back on the Steelers roster may be Chris Rainey, a fifth-round pick out of Florida.

At just 5'8", 180 pounds, Rainey is a bit undersized to be an every down back, but he possesses tremendous speed and a natural pass-catching ability. We recently took a look at Rainey' potential to provide a Darren Sproles/Dexter McCluster-type role for coordinator Todd Haley's offense and if he catches on to the nuances of the pro game quickly, Rainey could be the perfect candidate to provide an explosive punch to Pittsburgh's ground game.

Along with Isaac Redman and Jonathan Dwyer, Rainey will be in the mix for carries as Rashard Mendenhall's future remains in question following ACL surgery.

Steeler RB Jonathan Dwyer will be taking an extra step toward earning his backup role to Isaac Redman.

Prodded by two of the NFL’s best running backs in Maurice Jones-Drew and Matt Forte — they share the same agent — Dwyer will spend the next four weeks in North Miami Beach, Fla., at Pete Bommarito Performance Systems ensuring he will arrive at St. Vincent College on July 25 in the best shape of his life.

LeSean McCoy, Frank Gore, Ahmad Bradshaw and Jonathan Stewart also work out with Bommarito. So do some of Dwyer’s teammates, including Antonio Brown and Lawrence Timmons.

Fantasy Impact: 

Dwyer's weight has been an issue for him, causing him to get drafted lower as well as keeping in off the field and in the doghouse.

He's set to be Redman's backup this season, and if that position holds true, he's just an injury away from being a very usable fantasy option.

King on the Steelers' RB situation: "I think if your fantasy draft is tomorrow, you'd be smart to pick Isaac Redman ahead of Rashard Mendenhall, who is not ready to play football because of offseason knee surgery and should miss at least the first six games of the season."

Fantasy Impact: 

This echoes GM Kevin Colbert's "guess" that Mendenhall is headed for PUP. At best, Redman is the starting RB for the season and at worst, he'll start 6-8 games and enter a timeshare with a recovering Mendenhall during the second half of the season (barring injury, of course).

Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhal tore the ACL in his right knee Jan. 1 in Cleveland.

“My guess is [Mendenhall] will open the season on PUP (the physically unable to perform list),” GM Kevin Colbert said.

“You’ve got to remember both of those injuries happened late in the year.”

Mendenhall wouldn’t be eligible to play until after the Steelers’ sixth game if they start the season on the PUP list.

Fantasy Impact: 

If Mendenhall does indeed start the season on PUP, it will give a big boost to the draft stock of Isaac Redman, who figures to be the featured back while Mendenhall recovers. We currently have Redman as our #23 RB, five spots ahead of the general consensus. It appears he'll have the chance to prove his worth and would at worst be in a timeshare when Mendenhall finally returns.
