Steelers RB Isaac Redman has earned a larger role and said he was told he will get a series each half, do the short-yardage stuff everywhere but on the goal line (when Rashard Mendenhall stays in) and play a lot on third downs.

Fantasy Impact:

This is good news/bad news for Mendenhall owners who believed that he'd get to play on third down more often this season after the Steelers' RB coach called him an "all-phase running back" earlier this summer. However, it is good to hear that Mendenhall will remain the team's goal line back.

A backfield that looked to be somewhat shaky behind Rashard Mendenhall before training camp began has some length and depth to it.

Isaac Redman is a brute, a big, tough runner who can block, catch, shed tackles and take punishment. He is the clear No. 2 entering this season and could handle the job if Mendenhall were injured.

Fantasy Impact:

Redman is a guy to pick up if you have a deep roster and can carry Menenhall's handcuff.

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Isaac Redman has shown himself to be a runner and receiver who will not be denied since he burst into the hearts and minds of the fans, the media and, eventually, the coaching staff in the goal-line drills at Latrobe two years ago.

Now, he looks like an accomplished, strong 240-pound halfback who produces every chance he gets, as he did Friday night in Landover, Maryland.

Among many Steelers disappointments against the Redskins, Redman again was a beacon. He ran hard, broke tackles, and gained 42 yards on five carries that included a 22-yard run for a touchdown - all against Washington's first-team defense.

It is unlikely Bruce Arians, Pittsburgh's offensive coordinator, will pair Redman and Rashard Mendenhall in the same backfield, but he will not hesitate to use Redman, who has won over all his coaches' confidences the past two seasons. His development gives the Steelers a 1-2 punch they did not have a few years ago.

Fantasy Impact:

Mendenhall is a workhorse, so there's little reason to believe Redman will suddenly have value as a committee back. However, if you are drafting Mendenhall, it would be smart to take Redman as a handcuff.

Washington QB Rex Grossman Gains Upper Hand

Washington Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman completed 19 of 26 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown to help the Washington Redskins beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 16-7 on Friday night in the preseason opener for both teams.

Hoping to gain over early edge over an injured John Beck for the starting job, Grossman hit Santana Moss for an 8-yard score in the second quarter - although the drive came against Pittsburgh’s second-string defense.

Beck did not play. He sat out after tweaking his groin in practice last week.

While the Redskins’ starters played the entire first half, Pittsburgh’s first-stringers were done for the game by the end of the first quarter. Backup Isaac Redman had a 22-yard touchdown run for the Steelers.

Fantasy Impact:

You don't want Grossman or Beck on your team, but Grossman is probably the lesser of two evils if you have Santana Moss on your team.
