The Atlanta Falcons on Friday cut three veteran stars central to recent playoff success, including an appearance in last season's NFC Championship Game.

Running back Michael Turner, cornerback Dunta Robinson and defensive end John Abraham were released, the team announced.

Fantasy Impact: 

The Falcons have already been tied to Steven Jackson, which would be a good fit for both sides. Turner's departure leaves Jacquizz Rodgers as the lead back in Atlanta, though the Falcons are likely to add an RB, either by free agency or the draft.

The Falcons look to be in the running back market this offseason, according to those who know. Chances are the team will cut ties with 30-year old Michael Turner and look for a younger runner. Turner provides toughness, a solid locker room presence and power on downhill runs, but scouts say his ability to bounce and cut isn’t what it was.

Fantasy Impact: 

Jacquizz Rodgers and Jason Snelling would form a serviceable committee, but the Falcons are more likely to pursue a RB in free agency or the draft.

The Falcons seem committed to running back by committee. That’s fine. But the committee can’t include Michael Turner. He confirmed their pre-season fears that he had worn dead with a career-low average of 3.6 yards per carry. He ran well against Seattle but that was the exception. Jacquizz Rodgers is a keeper, but the offense needs a better running threat.

Adam Schefter does not believe that Falcons Jacquizz Rodgers is the long-term answer at RB: "Michael Turner has mileage on his tires and Jacquizz Rodgers is too small to be an every-down back." Schefter believes the Falcons will draft a RB.
