Sources: Panthers Interested in Adding Vick?

Ex-con Michael Vick has heard plenty of NFL teams say publicly in the last week that they don't want anything to do with him and the bad public relations he would likely bring to any team.

But the Carolina Panthers aren't saying no: Head coach John Fox is saying that he likes the quarterbacks he has right now but he's always interested in upgrading any position. He sure seems to be saying Mike Vick would be an upgrade over Jake Delhomme(notes), Josh Mccown(notes) and Matt Moore(notes).

Meanwhile, word on the street is that Vick's bankruptcy lawyers wanted $2.66 million to do the case but dropped the fee to $1.5 million, according to the Newport News Daily Press. No wonder the guy is bankrupt.

Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme just told reporters that though he's not a doctor, he expects Steve Smith to be ready for the start of the regular season. Also, he said he believes third-year wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett is ready to have a much more productive season. He said Jarrett looks in good shape and appears more confidence. Smith's shouder injury gives Jarrett a great opportunity to get practice repetitions with the first team.

When Jake Delhomme took the field with the first-team offense during Saturday's Fan Fest scrimmage at Bank of America Stadium, he was without the skill position players who usually surround him.

Running backs Deangelo Williams (toe) and Jonathan Stewart (sore Achilles) were held out as a precaution, and receivers Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad weren't put at risk either in the team's most extensive full-contact practice of the preseason.

Panthers coach John Fox elected to rest most of the top players during the 36-play intrasquad scrimmage Saturday at Bank of America Stadium.

The 15,549 fans didn't see running backs Deangelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart or wide receivers Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad. Defensive stalwart Julius Peppers also didn't play. Quarterback Jake Delhomme participated in six plays before making a quick exit.
