Fantasy Upside
Jared Cook has always been a mismatch on paper. At 6-foot-5 and 254 pounds, he's bigger than defensive backs forced to match up with him in coverage and he's faster than most linebackers. He also finished seventh among tight ends with 98 targets last season, up from the 83 looks he received in 2013. The Rams are changing offensive coordinators (Brian Schottenheimer to Frank Cignetti) and have a new quarterback (Nick Foles), but Cook should receive a fair amount of looks again this season.
Fantasy Downside
One of the reasons Lance Kendricks re-signed with the Rams this offseason was because the team promised him an expanded role in the passing game. He reportedly left more money on the table in Atlanta to return to St. Louis for four years at $18.5 million. Although Kendricks lines up in-line and Cook is often detached, if the Rams expand Kendricks' role in the passing game that will mean fewer targets for Cook. And despite seeing 98 targets a year ago, Cook finished with just 52 receptions for 634 yards and three touchdowns. Those numbers made him the 15th overall tight end in fantasy last season.
Bottom Line
Cook has been a tease since he entered the league in 2009, flashing big potential but failing to put together a breakout season. His highest fantasy finish came in 2013 when he was TE12 and there's no reason to believe his numbers will climb this year. Cook is what he is at this point in his career: A 50-catch, 630-yard, 3.5-touchdown player. Ranked No. 23 among tight ends at 4for4, avoid him on draft night.
