49ers RB Tevin Coleman (not injury related) missed practice Friday. Coleman has a preexisting condition that doesn't allow him to play if the air quality index is higher than 150 and the air quality is an issue in San Francisco this weekend. If he's out, it would improve Raheem Mostert's outlook while Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson could get in on the action as well.

Although he has been a member of the San Francisco 49ers only since April, left tackle Trent Williams didn't hesitate when asked recently which of his new teammates he's most excited to see this season:

Running back Jerick McKinnon.

"The way he's looked in the offseason, I just can't fathom him not being a breakout player," Williams said.

Fantasy Impact: 

Whether McKinnon, 28, will be able to reach pre-injury levels remains to be seen. The early returns are encouraging. He opened camp practicing without restriction and has authored at least one eye-opening run or catch in each of the early practices, the story said. He would fill a big void on the 49ers as they've coveted a pass-catching back since losing McKinnon.

Jerick McKinnon figures to be in line to take on the role of the 49ers’ third-down back with his ability to line up anywhere in the formation and run routes.

Fantasy Impact: 

We may be seeing how the 49ers use their three backs. It looks like Mostert and Coleman could get most of the early down work and we've seen a hot hand approach could be used with those two. This story was mainly about McKinnon's route running ability, something he excelled at with the Vikings a few years ago so it makes sense the third down role could be his.

I wouldn’t assume Raheem Mostert starts. Once he does, it will be the first start of his career. As dominant as Mostert was toward the end of the season, Kyle Shanahan and Bobby Turner liked starting games with Tevin Coleman because he’s a little bigger and more physical runner than the others.

So my guess is that the arrangement will be the same as last season: Coleman starts, with Turner then using his feel for who’s hot that day dictating the snap loads for the rest of the game.

The wild card, of course, is McKinnon, the author went on to say. It’s possible that he becomes the preferred tailback on third downs. There also could be instances in which he and another tailback are in the formation with McKinnon lining up in the slot or even out wide. The story added if McKinnon's knee isn't as good as the early reports, Wilson enters the picture.
