The 49ers have activated RB Jerick McKinnon from the PUP list. A key part of their backfield is back in the mix following an ACL tear last preseason.

Fantasy Impact: 

The activation of Jerick McKinnon can only cause trouble in fantasy, as the 49ers now have three above-average running backs vying for touches in an offense that often uses running backs in a committee. McKinnon does have a ways to go to get back up to speed and will most likely lag behind for a month or so as he works to make up ground. For now, Tevin Coleman remains the lead back, but it will be tough to keep Matt Breida off the field unless he's hurt.

RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) remains on PUP, but Kyle Shanahan said he could be activated soon.

Fantasy Impact: 

Maiocco is estimating Thursday, after the team's first day off at camp. With the addition of Coleman, McKinnon's value from last year before his knee injury takes a hit, and he's ranked 38th on our RB list while Coleman comes in at 29th.

Shanahan: 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) on track, expected to be the lead back

Kyle Shanahan says Jerick McKinnon is on pace in recovery from ACL tear and the expectation is for the RB to take lead role this season.

Fantasy Impact: 

Shanahan hand-picked McKinnon to be his lead back last summer and then an ACL tear derailed his season. Breida played well in his place, so we're expecting the two to be a formidable duo, a la Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman during Shanahan's days in Atlanta. In the 13 games that both Freeman and Coleman played in 2016, Freeman averaged 17.8 touches while Coleman averaged 11.5 touches. Last year, 49er running backs averaged 26.1 touches per game, so if that volume holds and Shahanan uses the same split as 2016, McKinnon would see 15.9 touches to Breida's 10.2 touches. Both backs should be fantasy relevant in 2019.

General Manager John Lynch shared a positive update on that front during an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio. He said Jimmy Garoppolo is throwing to his rehab partner Jerick McKinnon as the offseason gets underway.

“One of the best sights, the other day, I looked outside my office and he was throwing and throwing to Jerick McKinnon,” Lynch said.

Fantasy Impact: 

Both players, recovering from ACL injuries, will be able to continue rehab work at the facility in hopes of being well on their way to being full participants in practice once the offseason program gets to that point, the story said.
