CAR WR Jerricho Cotchery - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 – Jerricho Cotchery vs. Detroit

Jerricho Cotchery demonstrated his consistent hands and route running last week against the Bucs, catching four passes for 32 yards. He should benefit from the return of Cam Newton this week and from the matchup against one of the thinnest secondaries in the league. The Lions already lost their nickel corner to an injury Monday night, and they were pretty weak at the position to begin with.

That being said, Cotchery’s line last week is about the most you can expect from him week-to-week. With a nice matchup, and the return of Cam, we’re projecting a few more points against the Lions, but he’s still barely cracking our top 60 receivers and he’s better left on the bench or even on waivers.

CAR WR Jerricho Cotchery - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 – Jerricho Cotchery vs. Tampa Bay
Where rookie Kelvin Benjamin excels in upside and potential, Jerricho Cotchery brings reliability and veteran savvy to the Panthers revamped receiving corps. Cotchery spent his last three seasons in Pittsburgh, and at the age of 31 last year, he put up over 600 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns.

Cotchery will enter the season as the WR2 in Carolina, but that’s a spot that has not traditionally been fantasy dynamite. With a large role in the offense, he has a pretty good chance of reproducing his yardage totals from a year ago, but with a third of his career scores coming from last season alone, the touchdown total is probably an outlier. Against the Bucs this week, he’s not ranked as a viable fantasy starter. The Panthers passing offense simply doesn’t invoke enough confidence to make him worth the start.

CAR WR Jerricho Cotchery - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Jerricho Cotchery comes to Carolina this season after a fairly productive year in Pittsburgh, finishing with 602 yards and 10 touchdowns on 46 receptions, working as the Steelers’ third receiver most of the year. The Panthers lost their top four wide outs this offseason and will be counting on Cotchery to be a steadying presence and a mentor to rookie first round pick Kelvin Benjamin.

Fantasy Upside
Cotchery has Cam Newton throwing him the ball and his only competition for the WR2 spot on the team is former Eagle Jason Avant, and former Buc Tiquan Underwood who will be fighting just to make the roster. Cotchery is a consistent target who runs good routes and proved last year that he can be a valuable red zone threat. Repeating last year’s numbers, or winding up with similar numbers to Brandon LaFell last season (627 yards and 5 touchdowns) wouldn’t be terribly surprising.

Fantasy Downside
The Panthers don’t pass the ball a whole lot, so Cotchery will struggle to put up good numbers if he’s beaten out by Jason Avant for the WR2 spot on the team. Also, Cotchery is 32 years old and has only had one season on his resume with over 1,000 yards, and that was back in 2007 with the Jets.

Bottom Line
Cotchery is a low risk option to fill out your WR bench, particularly in larger leagues. While we are not projecting a lot of points for him, Cotchery is a guy that can be had in the last round of most drafts and offers an option for needy fantasy teams looking to avoid taking a zero in a given week. If the rest of your WR’s are big upside, big risk type players, then Cotchery makes sense on the back end. If not, then a younger guy with more upside is probably a better option.
