A blocking specialist, Dray had his best season as a receiver last year with the Arizona Cardinals, grabbing 26 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns. In the first three years of his career, Dray had a mere seven receptions. Now with Cleveland, can Dray continue his growth spurt?
Fantasy Upside
Last year in Arizona, tight ends were not heavily featured in the passing game under new head coach Bruce Arians. It makes sense when you have a duo like Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd, yet Dray still managed to find a degree of success. In Cleveland, there is no one closely resembling Floyd or Fitzgerald out wide. Tight end is a key receiving position in the Browns offense.
Fantasy Downside
However, the reason tight end is such an important position is the presence of Jordan Cameron, who caught 80 passes in 2013. Dray is stuck behind Cameron on the depth chart and is not vastly better than Cameron’s former backup, Gary Barnidge, who will also see some playing time.
Bottom Line
Dray would not be a recommended pickup even if something happened to Cameron. With his blocking prowess and less athleticism than many who play his position, it would be hard to envision him in a primary receiving role, especially with Barnidge also on the roster.
