Scouting report

SF QB Jimmy Garoppolo - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Green Bay Packers

Jimmy Garoppolo has 741 yards and eight touchdowns against the Cardinals this year. He has averaged 217 yards and 1.25 touchdowns and a pick per game when not facing the Cardinals. Fantasy owners should take those two lofty Cardinals games with a grain of salt. Arizona is not good defensively and Garoppolo has been winning this year, but not much of a fantasy quarterback in most games.

This week, Garoppolo faces a Packers defense that ranks 11th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks, so he may struggle to replicate his lofty numbers from last week against Arizona. Fantasy owners should consider him a QB2 option or a low-end streamer in most leagues, as he remains mostly potential and not reliably productive.

SF QB Jimmy Garoppolo - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs. Arizona Cardinals

Jimmy Garoppolo only threw one interception last week, but it easily could’ve been several more as the Seattle defense had his number in a thrilling Seahawks victory in overtime. Garoppolo finished with 248 yards and a touchdown as he was sacked five times. He’s really only had one good fantasy game this season, making him hard to trust on a week-to-week basis.

Do you know when Garoppolo has his one good fantasy game? Two weeks ago, against these very same Cardinals. He had 317 yards and four touchdowns and completed 75.7% of his passes the last time he faced Arizona. With a nice matchup this week, we have Garoppolo ranked as a fringe starter or solid streaming option, just outside our top 10.

SF QB Jimmy Garoppolo - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 vs. Seattle Seahawks

Jimmy Garoppolo blew up against the Cardinals last week, throwing for 317 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. He was sacked only once on the day and showed the type of gamesmanship the 49ers were looking for when they traded for him and gave him all the money. Garoppolo is unlikely to repeat those numbers often, but in a good matchup and a surprisingly close game, his arm talent was on display.

This week, Garoppolo has some upside against a Seahawks defense that has struggled this season. They just gave up 335 yards and a pair of touchdowns to Jameis Winston, and they rank 20th in the league in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. Because of his lack of fantasy production throughout much of the season, it’s hard to trust Garoppolo in shallow leagues, but he’s worth considering as a QB2 or streaming option in what should be a good matchup this week.

SF QB Jimmy Garoppolo - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 at Arizona Cardinals

Jimmy Garoppolo continues to win games for the 49ers, as San Francisco is surprisingly undefeated through seven games. However, he’s been extremely underwhelming as a fantasy quarterback. He’s failed to throw for 300 yards in a game and is averaging 1.3 touchdowns and 1.0 interceptions per game. In his last four games, he’s thrown for over 200 yards only once, and he hasn’t attempted more than 22 passes in either of his last two outings.

This week, Garoppolo has a fantastic matchup against the Cardinals. Only the Dolphins, Buccaneers and Raiders rank lower in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks this season. While that’s some considerable upside given the matchup, Garoppolo is still risky as anything more than a streaming QB2. The 49ers may wind up winning this game handily and emphasizing the run game.

SF QB Jimmy Garoppolo - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs. Carolina Panthers

Jimmy Garoppolo keeps winning games, but he’s not putting up good enough fantasy numbers to consider starting in most leagues. He threw for only 151 yards and an interception last week against Washington – albeit in horrendous weather and field conditions – and has failed to eclipse 300 yards passing in a game this season. This week, he faces the fourth-best defense in the league in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks, making him even riskier than usual. Expect a slugfest this week with minimal production from the passing game.

SF QB Jimmy Garoppolo - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at Washington Redskins

Jimmy Garoppolo has the 49ers off to a hot start as they remain undefeated after five games and a convincing victory over the Rams last week. He’s completing 69.9% of his passes on the season, but he hasn’t been particularly great otherwise, statistically. He threw for 243 yards and an interception last week – though he did run in a touchdown – and he’s averaging just 232.6 yards per game this year.

This week, Garoppolo has a nice matchup against a Washington team that ranks 28th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks this year, which should make him worth considering as a streaming option. However, if the 49ers get up early, it’s possible he doesn’t attempt many passes. He’s already averaging only 29.2 pass attempts per game, and the team would prefer to grind this win out. Garoppolo is a streaming QB2 option this week.

SF QB Jimmy Garoppolo - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Los Angeles Rams

Jimmy Garoppolo had an efficient game against Cleveland Monday night, throwing for a pair of touchdowns and 181 yards while completing 69% of his passes in a blowout victory. Garoppolo has the 49ers off to an undefeated start through four games, though his fantasy numbers have been subpar to date. He’s yet to throw for more than 300 yards in a game and has thrown seven touchdowns and four interceptions so far this season.

This week, Garoppolo has some upside against a Rams defense that has been very average against quarterbacks this year – 17th in aFPA to the position – but has given up big numbers to Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston over the past two weeks. Garoppolo is clearly on a team that wants to play ball control, so he only has so much going for him, but he’s worth considering in 2QB leagues with what looks like a pretty good matchup.
