BAL RB J.K. Dobbins - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Cincinnati Bengals

J.K. Dobbins had just five carries and one reception for a total of 17 yards last week against Washington. Dobbins has a nice skill set and should continue to see work, but with the Ravens employing a three-RB attack at the moment, he’s not getting significant touches yet. Dobbins will face a Bengals defense that ranks 21st in aFPA to opposing running backs this year, but his inconsistent touches make it hard to trust him in most leagues. Keep him on the bench until he’s getting more touches.

BAL RB J.K. Dobbins - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Washington Football Team

J.K. Dobbins led the Ravens’ running backs in snaps with 43% last week, but he still got only one carry. He caught four balls for 38 yards, making it likely the Ravens see him as a primary passing down back, but that may not be consistent enough to warrant fantasy consideration on a weekly basis. Most likely, Dobbins’ value will be tied to the health of Mark Ingram, and both will cannibalize each other’s value in most games.

This week specifically, the Ravens are likely to get up early on Washington, reducing the number of passing downs. There might be a lot of Gus Edwards and Mark Ingram this week. Sit Dobbins.

BAL RB J.K. Dobbins - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Kansas City Chiefs

J.K. Dobbins had a 44-yard run at the end of the game in a blowout victory against the Texans last week, but he was otherwise largely unused. He finished with three total touches, including one reception on one target, for a total of 61 yards – including the 44-yarder. Disappointing after seven carries and two touchdowns in Week 1. Dobbins’ production will likely come in spurts throughout the season, so he’s risky to count on, but he has playmaking ability and is worth keeping on your roster. It’s a little concerning that Gus Edwards got the bulk of the work after the game was well in hand, meaning Dobbins is likely more of a supplemental player than an actual backup or handcuff. Sit him for now.

BAL RB J.K. Dobbins - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Houston Texans

While it’s super exciting that rookie J.K. Dobbins had a pair of touchdowns in his NFL debut against the Browns, fantasy owners should take a step back before overreacting. Dobbins could be great, and he’s likely to continue to have a role in the Ravens’ offense, but he only had seven carries and averaged just 3.14 yards per carry. He also didn’t see a single target in the passing game. Be excited about Dobbins on your roster as a potential long-term asset, but it’s too early to count on him in fantasy lineups as anything more than a boom/bust RB3 or flex option this week.

BAL RB J.K. Dobbins - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Cleveland Browns

J.K. Dobbins was electric at Ohio State, but it looks like he’s starting the season number four on the depth chart. That’s not surprising, given the shortened offseason, but fantasy owners probably want to steer clear of starting the rookie in the short term, at least until we see how the backfield touches are going to shake out.

BAL RB J.K. Dobbins - 2020 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

J.K. Dobbins is coming off a very productive three-year career at Ohio State, capped off with 2,003 yards and 21 touchdowns on the ground last season. Dobbins has soft hands, with at least 20 receptions each year, and his route running is impressive at this stage in his development. From a talent perspective, he should be ready to contribute immediately. He showed out against some of the best teams in the country. His last four games of his college career, he averaged 178.5 yards and two touchdowns against Penn State, Michigan, Wisconsin and Clemson. The Ravens drafted him in the second round, so they’ll want to give him opportunities early to show what he can do.

Fantasy Downside

Those opportunities may come in a creative way with Mark Ingram still on the roster. The Ravens split touches between Ingram (202 carries), Gus Edwards (133) and Justice Hill (58) last season, and I would expect Dobbins to dig more into the touches Edwards and Hill got than into Ingram’s workload. If that’s the case, Dobbins will cap out as a borderline depth guy in most fantasy leagues.

2020 Bottom Line

Dobbins is a great option for looking toward the future, but he’s risky to bank on as more than a lottery ticket in most redraft leagues. While his receiving ability should allow him to do some damage in the passing game, the presence of Ingram limits his upside. Dobbins is currently being drafted in the ninth round of 12-team leagues, which is probably a little too rich when you’re talking about taking him over guys like Tarik Cohen and Matt Breida, but the upside is there if you like to gamble.
