Scouting report

HOU RB Joe Mixon - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs. New York Jets

Entering Halloween night, Joe Mixon has been very much of a treat for the Houston Texans, rushing for over 100 yards in all four games he has finished this season -- he was injured during the Week 2 game against the Bears. As the workhorse for the Texans, he has a chance almost every week to hit the century mark, just like he will Thursday night against the Jets, who are allowing over 100 yards on the ground. The defense hasn't been as vaunted as previous years. With Stefon Diggs now also out in addition to Nico Collins, Houston will rely even more so on Mixon. Keep rolling with the hot hand this week.

HOU RB Joe Mixon - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs. Indianapolis Colts

Joe Mixon is back to being the workhorse for the Texans. Mixon carried 25 times and rushed for over 100 yards for the second straight game and third time this season in last week's last-second loss to the Packers. This week, he gets the Colts for the second time this season. Mixon rushed 30 times for 159 yards and a touchdown in his Texans debut in Week 1 at Indy. Now he gets them at home. Ironically, all three of his 100-yard games have come on the road (Colts, Patriots, Packers). Mixon is near the top of the board this week at the running back position.

HOU RB Joe Mixon - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at Green Bay Packers

Joe Mixon returned from injury last week and posted his second 100-yard rushing game in three games played, going for 102 and a touchdown against the Patriots. Mixon has now played two full games -- he got injured during the Week 2 game against Chicago -- and has 100+ yards and a touchdown in both. He does face a tough matchup against a top-ten rushing defense in Green Bay, but Mixon should start climbing back into being a workhorse now that he's full healthy again. Keep Mixon as a solid RB2 this week with upside.

HOU RB Joe Mixon - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at New England Patriots

Joe Mixon could be returning this week from a Week 2 ankle injury. If he does, he'll face a Patriots defense that ranks 13th in rushing yards allowed per game. It will be interesting to see how much Houston runs him coming off an injury, but if his early-season work is any indication (30 carries), he'll be the workhorse in Houston. He's a solid RB2 this week.

HOU RB Joe Mixon - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Chicago Bears

Quite the debut in Houston for Joe Mixon. 159 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries. That includes 115 yards after contact. He'll have a chance for more this week after Chicago allowed over 100 yards combined between Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears last week against the Titans. The Texans have already shown an improved offensive line which will only mean Mixon's good fortunes should continue throughout the season. He;s a solid RB2 this week.

HOU RB Joe Mixon - 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

It's a new era for Joe Mixon. After seven seasons in Cincinnati, Mixon will now lead the charge in the Houston backfield. It's a good spot from a fantasy perspective. Houston was a top-12 team in total carries to running backs. Mixon was RB7 last season after posting his fourth 1,000-yard season and rushed for nine touchdowns. With Houston having Stefon Diggs, Nico Collins, and Tank Dell, defenses will have a hard time loading the box to stop the run game. Mixon could see plenty of green grass.

Fantasy Downside

Dameon Pierce is still around and is ready to prove last season's struggles were a fluke. But even at that, he's not likely to cut too much into Mixon's workload.

2024 Bottom Line

Mixon should be in the RB2 mix this season as the clear leader in Houston's backfield. Another 1,000-yard season could be on the horizon. Mixon is going in the 4th round in drafts, a good spot as your No. 2 running back or a potential RB1 if you loaded up at other positions early.

CIN RB Joe Mixon - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Kansas City Chiefs
Joe Mixon only had 13 touches last week which produced a decent 50 yards. The Bengals got themselves in a big deficit so he wasn't involved as much as usual. It was the second straight week under 20 touches which is not the norm in the Cincy offense.

Mixon faces the Chiefs who are ranked 26th in aFPA to running backs. In the playoff last year, KC held the Cincinnati running back to a total of 34 yards.

Despite a favorable matchup, we lower Mixon down to a low-end RB2 for Week 17. Should get decent fantasy numbers, but we don't like the downward trend in touches the past couple games.
