Scouting report

HOU RB Joe Mixon - 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

It's a new era for Joe Mixon. After seven seasons in Cincinnati, Mixon will now lead the charge in the Houston backfield. It's a good spot from a fantasy perspective. Houston was a top-12 team in total carries to running backs. Mixon was RB7 last season after posting his fourth 1,000-yard season and rushed for nine touchdowns. With Houston having Stefon Diggs, Nico Collins, and Tank Dell, defenses will have a hard time loading the box to stop the run game. Mixon could see plenty of green grass.

Fantasy Downside

Dameon Pierce is still around and is ready to prove last season's struggles were a fluke. But even at that, he's not likely to cut too much into Mixon's workload.

2024 Bottom Line

Mixon should be in the RB2 mix this season as the clear leader in Houston's backfield. Another 1,000-yard season could be on the horizon. Mixon is going in the 4th round in drafts, a good spot as your No. 2 running back or a potential RB1 if you loaded up at other positions early.

CIN RB Joe Mixon - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Kansas City Chiefs
Joe Mixon only had 13 touches last week which produced a decent 50 yards. The Bengals got themselves in a big deficit so he wasn't involved as much as usual. It was the second straight week under 20 touches which is not the norm in the Cincy offense.

Mixon faces the Chiefs who are ranked 26th in aFPA to running backs. In the playoff last year, KC held the Cincinnati running back to a total of 34 yards.

Despite a favorable matchup, we lower Mixon down to a low-end RB2 for Week 17. Should get decent fantasy numbers, but we don't like the downward trend in touches the past couple games.

CIN RB Joe Mixon - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Pittsburgh Steelers
Joe Mixon only had 13 touches last week which is low for him. It produced 61 total yards and a touchdown. Mixon has a minimum of one touchdown in seven of his last eight games. We have noted many times that when he gets the touches, his fantasy numbers are very good.

Mixon faces the Steelers who are ranked 24th in aFPA to running backs. However in the first meeting this season, he had only eight carries for 16 yards, but had two receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown to make his managers happy.

Start Mixon as a solid RB2 for Week 16. These games are usually low-scoring AFC North battles so although Mixon should have an impact, it won't be as one of the top fantasy running backs.

CIN RB Joe Mixon - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Minnesota Vikings
Joe Mixon had 24 touches for 125 yards and a touchdown. He has three touchdowns over the last two games and has ranked as one of the best fantasy running backs in recent weeks. He has been very effective in both the running and passing game.

Mixon faces the Vikings who are ranked second in aFPA to running backs. The Bengals offense has been good with backup QB Jake Browning, but it faces it's toughest matchup in this stretch.

Start Mixon but only as a RB2 for Week 15. We expect him to continue to get the 15-20 touches, but the production won't be there this week.

CIN RB Joe Mixon - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Indianapolis Colts
After a tough game two weeks ago, Joe Mixon bounced back last week with 25 touches for 117 total yards and two touchdowns. Once again when he gets the touches, Mixon comes through for fantasy managers. He especially was good in PPR leagues with six receptions last game.

Mixon faces the Colts who are ranked dead last in the NFL in aFPA to running backs. This matchup should have him put up very good fantasy numbers and the fact Cincinnati's offense looked good last week with backup QB Jake Browning bodes well for him moving forward.

Start Mixon as a high-end RB2 for Week 14. He would be ranked higher if the offense continues to move forward, but there is always a chance it doesn't.

CIN RB Joe Mixon - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Jacksonville Jaguars
One would think that the Bengals would ride veteran running back Joe Mixon with the backup quarterback starting, but he actually only had 10 touches, his lowest total of the season. He did gain 60 total yards thanks to 44 receiving yards, but Cincy didn't run the ball well.

Mixon faces the Jaguars who have a good run defense. There is no doubt the fantasy stock of all Cincinnati skill players has dropped because of the injury to Joe Burrow. But the Bengals should get back to getting one of their best players the football.

Mixon ranks as a high-end RB3 or Flex for Week 13. At times this season, he was ranked close to an RB1 but those days are probably done for this year even if he gets his touches back to 15+.

CIN RB Joe Mixon - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
Joe Mixon had a strong game last week with 21 touches for 100 yards and a touchdown. Although many of the Bengals skill players will have stock that will drop with QB Joe Burrow out for the season, we think Mixon will still get his touches.

The Steelers are up next and are ranked 22nd in aFPA to running backs. Mixon has had mixed results during his career against Pittsburgh, but Cincy is going to need their veterans to carry the offense the rest of the season.

Despite a favorable matchup, Mixon ranks as a low-end RB2 for Week 12. The touches should be there but how good the Bengals offense can be without their quarterback us very questionable.
