Washington QB Rex Grossman Gains Upper Hand

Washington Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman completed 19 of 26 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown to help the Washington Redskins beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 16-7 on Friday night in the preseason opener for both teams.

Hoping to gain over early edge over an injured John Beck for the starting job, Grossman hit Santana Moss for an 8-yard score in the second quarter - although the drive came against Pittsburgh’s second-string defense.

Beck did not play. He sat out after tweaking his groin in practice last week.

While the Redskins’ starters played the entire first half, Pittsburgh’s first-stringers were done for the game by the end of the first quarter. Backup Isaac Redman had a 22-yard touchdown run for the Steelers.

Fantasy Impact: 

You don't want Grossman or Beck on your team, but Grossman is probably the lesser of two evils if you have Santana Moss on your team.

Redskins Quarterback Rex Grossman is listed first, followed by John Beck. Not a surprise considering Beck has been slowed the last few days by a groin injury.

Fantasy Impact: 

Not that we are suggesting to rush to your waiver wire and pick-up either of these two signal callers, but this situation should be monitored as direct impact to WRs and TEs.

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said he never announced John Beck as his starting quarterback:

“First of all, I’ve never mentioned a starter,” Shanahan replied, which is true. “I’ve never even insinuated a starter. I said I had a lot of belief in John Beck, I had a lot of belief in Rex Grossman. We’re gonna play the best player at the end of camp, but I do believe in both those guys. I’ve watched them practice. You make decisions based on practice. I’ve watched both these guys for a year, I like what they bring to the table. Now I get a chance to watch them compete on a day-to-day basis.)”

A day off wasn’t enough for quarterback John Beck’s injured groin to fully heal. He sat out team drills during the Redskins’ practice on Monday morning, and his status for Friday’s preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers is in doubt.

“It’d be nice if it didn’t happen, but now it’s just make sure it doesn’t get worse,” Beck said after practice. “That’s the big thing.”

Beck’s injury isn’t believed to be serious, and whether he can fully participate in practice is being evaluated on a daily basis. Still, it temporarily saps some of the intrigue from his competition for the starting job against Rex Grossman.
