Jonathan Stewart heads to PUP list

The Carolina Panthers will go without the help of running back Jonathan Stewart for the first six weeks of the season.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that the team has chosen to place Stewart on the regular-season physically unable to perform list after a doctor weighed in negatively on the back's surgically repaired right ankle Tuesday.

Stewart won't be eligible to play until Oct. 20, when the St. Louis Rams visit the Panthers in Week 7.

Fantasy Impact: 

That means DeAngelo Williams will take advantage. He should get a bump in rankings and now has RB2 potential. Rookie Kenjon Barner could get some work and maybe Mike Tolbert gets some goal line work, but Williams should be the guy.

Jonathan Stewart meeting with doctor tomorrow. We could know by tomorrow afternoon if he goes to PUP for the regular season.

Fantasy Impact: 

DeAngelo Williams would get a bump in value if Stewart can't play Week 1, or especially if he goes on the PUP list. There were grumblings that the team wasn't ruling him out to begin the year, but it seems very unlikely he'll be ready to go.

Panthers have not given up hope that RB Jonathan Stewart could be ready for their opener, but probably not realistic.

Fantasy Impact: 

DeAngelo Williams is becoming an interesting middle round pick, but he's not guaranteed a starting job even if he stays healthy due to the possible return of Stewart. Williams has been very productive when given a healthy workload; he was #7 in FP/touch in 2011 and #4 in 2012. Ideally, he'd be a RB4 with upside, but he's starting to be drafted as a RB3.

Panthers not ruling out PUP for Jonathan Stewart

RB Jonathan Stewart will miss his third straight preseason game Thursday night at Baltimore and Panthers coach Ron Rivera isn't ruling out the possibility of putting the running back on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

If that happens, Stewart would miss at least the first six weeks of the season.

"At this point anything is an option," Rivera said following Tuesday's practice. "What you're hoping is you can get him on the football field and we'll see once the doctor gets a chance to look at him."

Fantasy Impact: 

A spot on the PUP list for Stewart is a huge bump in value for DeAngelo Williams. We rank Williams 34th with an ADP of the 10th round, but that would surely change if Stewart is lost for the first six games. Rookie RB Kenjon Barner has seen increased action in Stewart's absence as well.
