Scouting report

CAR RB Jonathan Stewart - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at New England Patriots

Jonathan Stewart had 57 yards on 12 carries last week against the Saints. He continues to get the bulk of the touches out of the backfield, especially on first and second down, making him a viable fantasy option in standard leagues for owners looking for a few guaranteed points and a high floor.

This week, Stewart has a nice matchup against the Patriots, who are 26th in the league in rushing yards allowed. The Panthers will need to throw the ball to keep up with the New England offense, further limiting Stewart’s upside, but overall he remains a reasonable low-end fringe RB2 option in large, standard leagues.

CAR RB Jonathan Stewart - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. New Orleans Saints

Jonathan Stewart only had 40 yards rushing last week against the Bills, but he had 15 carries, which is a good sign for fantasy owners hoping he’ll put up fairly reliable RB2 numbers. Stewart also had 18 carries in Week 1, making it seem likely he’ll continue to get a steady workload.

The Saints are terrible on defense and have allowed 248 rushing yards and a 4.1 yards-per-carry average on the ground through two games. Expect the Panthers to continue to feed Stewart, and for him to find more space against a struggling defense, making him a solid RB2 play, especially in standard formats.

CAR RB Jonathan Stewart - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Buffalo Bills

Jonathan Stewart had a nice start to the season against the 49ers. He only had 65 yards on the ground, but he got a full workload in with 18 carries. He also caught 2 passes for 17 yards and a touchdown. Christian McCaffrey got his share of touches as well, finishing with 13 carries and 5 receptions, but it was good to see Stewart remain a major part of the offense.

If this week’s tilt against the Bills is a closer game, it seems unlikely Carolina will be able to run the ball 38 times again, but Stewart should still be a lock for over a dozen touches, giving him low-end RB2 potential, particularly in standard league formats.

CAR RB Jonathan Stewart - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at San Francisco 49ers

Jonathan Stewart has made it through 13 games in each of his past three seasons, which is an accomplishment for a player who played in only 15 games combined from 2012-2013. Stewart didn’t light up the box scores last season, but he ran for a respectable 824 yards and 9 touchdowns.

Stewart’s upside is limited with the addition of rookie Christian McCaffrey in the backfield, and Cam Newton is always a threat to steal goal-line work. However, he has low-end RB2/RB3 upside this week against a 49ers team that gave up 165.9 rushing yards per game a season ago. Don’t expect much in the passing game out of Stewart, but he should still get two-down work.

CAR RB Jonathan Stewart - 2017 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Jonathan Stewart put up 824 yards on 3.8 yards per carry last season for a disappointing Panthers team. He also scored nine touchdowns, becoming a primary short-yardage runner for Carolina with quarterback Cam Newton running less and fullback Mike Tolbert being reduced to a limited role in the offense. Stewart should remain the lead back and get at least a dozen carries per game. With Tolbert now a Bill, and reports of the Panthers continuing to limit Newton’s exposure, Stewart's chances of duplicating his touchdown production from last season are high.

Fantasy Downside

Stewart has never been the most durable back, and he's entering his age-30 season. While Cam Newton’s presence in the run game might decrease with time, the dual-threat quarterback will still take away opportunities from Stewart. Most concerning is the fact the Panthers used the eighth pick in the draft on versatile back Christian McCaffrey, who will not only take away carries but might completely eliminate Stewart’s activity in the passing game completely. An effective receiver out of the backfield early in his career, Stewart’s targets have dropped steadily over the past three seasons and he had only eight receptions in 2016.

2017 Bottom Line

With a history of injuries and a diminishing role in the offense, Stewart offers very little in upside for fantasy owners. His ADP is right around the ninth or tenth round, however, which makes him a viable backup option for owners looking for a third back. If he continues to get over a dozen carries per game, even as a two-down back, Stewart will have value as a plug-and-play starter in most leagues, especially in standard scoring formats.

CAR RB Jonathan Stewart - Week 17, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Tampa Bay

Jonathan Stewart was disappointing against the Falcons last week, gaining only 52 total yards. However, the Falcons forced the Panthers to abandon the run, and Stewart ended up with only 12 touches on the day, including one short reception. Stewart should have a bigger work load against the Bucs this week.

Tampa Bay is below average against the run this year, tied for 19th in the league in rushing touchdowns allowed. They also rank 24th in the league in rushing yards given up, and they gave up two touchdowns to Cameron Artis-Payne when these two teams met earlier this year. Stewart should be able to put up steady RB2 numbers as the Panthers try to help keep Tampa out of the post-season and end the year on a high note.

CAR RB Jonathan Stewart - Week 16, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Atlanta

Jonathan Stewart had a nice game against Washington last week, putting up 132 yards on 25 carries. He didn’t find the end zone, but the consistent workload he gets week after week makes him a solid, high-floor RB2 option in all league formats.

This week, Stewart faces an Atlanta team that has been better against the run than against the pass, but that’s largely because the Falcon offense forces opposing teams to throw the ball more than run it. Expect Stewart to get another full workload this week and put up solid RB2 numbers. What he lacks in upside, he makes up for in consistency, and fantasy owners looking for a guy that won’t get a goose egg, Stewart is a good option.
