Scouting report

IND RB Jonathan Taylor - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 at Houston Texans

Jonathan Taylor will be back in Week 8 for the Colts, just in time for a key game against the Texans. Taylor had 48 yards and a touchdown against Houston in Week 1 but followed that up with back-to-back 100-yard games. Taylor remains one of the top backs in the league and, when healthy, is an easy RB1 option.

IND RB Jonathan Taylor - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Jonathan Taylor saw almost double the number of carries in Week 3 (23) as in Week 2 (12). That resulted in his second straight 100-yard rushing day while also scoring twice. He does face a tough matchup this week. The Steelers have been one of the best rushing defenses through three weeks, leading the league in expected points added per rush allowed and sitting third in total rushing yards per game allowed, behind only the Ravens and Vikings. Even with the tough matchup, Taylor is a top talent and shouldn't be shied away from. He's still a clear RB1 for this week.

IND RB Jonathan Taylor - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Chicago Bears

Interestingly, Jonathan Taylor only carried the football 12 times last week against the Packers. He still rushed for over 100 yards. His touchdown streak came to an end in seven straight games. He'll have a chance to start a new streak against the Bears, who have been solid overall thus far against the run but did allow a rushing touchdown to Tony Pollard in Week 1. Taylor is a top-ten option this week at running back.

IND RB Jonathan Taylor - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Green Bay Packers

Jonathan Taylor continues to have a nose for the end zone. He now has a touchdown in each of his last seven games dating back to last season. He has a chance to make it eight straight against a Packers defense that allowed two rushing touchdowns to Eagles RB Saquon Barkley last week in Brazil. And with the rushing threat of QB Anthony Richardson, it becomes hard for defenses to zero in on Taylor. That said, Taylor had just 48 yards on 16 carries against the Texans. Still, thre's enough upside to keep Taylor as a top-ten back this week in fantasy circles.

IND RB Jonathan Taylor - 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Jonathan Taylor looks healthy again and when he is healthy, he has the upside of being one of the best running backs in the entire league. Taylor reached nearly 750 rushing yards and seven touchdowns and that was with missing six total games, including the first three. From Week 7 on, Taylor was third among running backs with 16.8 fantasy points per game. He'll also finally get to work with Anthony Richardson, who should open up the passing game and open up holes for Taylor.

Fantasy Downside

Richardson may also be a downside for Taylor. Richardson's own rushing ability could vulture work away from Taylor, especially at the goal line. Our John Paulsen notes that Richardson had a 38% goal-line carry rate. We'll see if that changes with Richardson and Taylor both on the field together.

2024 Bottom Line

The bottom line is that Taylor is still a very good running back and worthy of being an RB1 on your team. He may not be the overall RB1 anymore but still a top option nonetheless, even with the possibility of Richardson vulturing goal-line touchdowns. Zack Moss is now in Cincinnati so it's Evan Hull and Tyler Goodson among those behind Taylor, so Taylor will see the bulk of the work. Grab Taylor early.

IND RB Jonathan Taylor - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Las Vegas Raiders

Jonathan Taylor was held to just 2.4 yards per carry against the Falcons last week, but he received 18 carries and found the end zone, which bodes well for his health. Taylor should continue in his lead back role as long as he stays off the injury report, and he’s shown he can still produce when he’s available. In just eight games this season, he’s still found the end zone six times and averaged 74.3 yards from scrimmage per game.

This week, Taylor faces a Las Vegas defense that ranks 25th in aFPA to opposing running backs. In a nice matchup with an expected full workload, Taylor should be considered a viable RB1 in all fantasy formats this week. Start him.

IND RB Jonathan Taylor - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Atlanta Falcons

Jonathan Taylor is expected to return after missing time with a thumb injury. He scored two touchdowns in his last outing and has 551 yards and five touchdowns total in his seven games of action this year. With Zack Moss suffering an arm injury against the Steelers last week, the Colts are going to need their top back.

If Taylor returns, he’ll face an Atlanta defense that ranks 14th in aFPA to opposing running backs. Expect the Colts to lean on the run game once again, and for Taylor to get a full workload. Watch the injury report carefully and be prepared with a backup plan, but as long as he’s active, he should be considered a viable RB1 option in all leagues.
