Scouting report

IND RB Jonathan Taylor - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs. Baltimore Ravens

Jonathan Taylor struggled against the Lions last week, gaining just 22 yards on 11 carries. He also may be struggling with an ankle issue, so fantasy owners will want to check on his status heading into this week’s matchup against the Ravens. Taylor has been disappointing as the starter, and fantasy owners weren’t happy to see Jordan Wilkins out-produce him after the game was already in hand last week.

The Ravens rank sixth in aFPA to opposing running backs. If Taylor gets a full workload and the Colts can stay close to the Ravens on the scoreboard, he has a shot at quality numbers. But with his recent production and coming off an ankle issue, he’s a risky RB2 option in most leagues. Monitor his status heading into the weekend.

IND RB Jonathan Taylor - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 at Detroit Lions

Jonathan Taylor put up a decent stat line against the Bengals before the bye last week, catching four balls and rushing 12 times for a total of 115 yards from scrimmage. On the one hand, Taylor is averaging 18 touches per game since Marlon Mack got hurt in Week 1. On the other hand, he’s only rushed for 100 yards once and has looked pretty mediocre with the huge opportunity he has, although he does have three touchdowns in five starts.

This week, Taylor faces a Lions’ defense that ranks 27th in aFPA to opposing running backs. If he gets his usual 18 touches in this matchup, he should put up legit RB1 numbers. Start him in all leagues, as we have him ranked inside our top-10.

IND RB Jonathan Taylor - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Cincinnati Bengals

Jonathan Taylor had a touchdown last week against the Browns, but he had only 12 carries and 57 yards as the Colts’ turnovers left them trailing for much of the game. Taylor has high upside as the primary back behind a solid offensive line – albeit missing Anthony Castonzo – and his 18.5 touches per game since taking over as the starter in Week 2 give him a high floor as well.

This week, Taylor should get back on track against a struggling Bengals defense that ranks 21st in the league in aFPA to opposing running backs. Fantasy owners should start him in all leagues, as we have him ranked in our top-five running back rankings this week.

IND RB Jonathan Taylor - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Cleveland Browns

Jonathan Taylor had 17 carries for 68 yards last week, adding 11 yards and a reception in the passing game. Taylor’s averaged 18.7 carries per game since Marlon Mack’s injury, giving him a high floor every week. While his workload hasn’t really translated into elite production the last two weeks – he’s averaging just 3.8 yards per carry this season – the points should follow the opportunity at some point.

This week, Taylor faces the Browns, who rank 13th in aFPA to opposing running backs. Expect the Colts to lean heavy on the ground game as long as the defense can continue to keep scores low, which should benefit Taylor. We have him ranked inside the top-10 this week, a must-start in all league formats.

IND RB Jonathan Taylor - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Chicago Bears

Jonathan Taylor had just 13 carries last week in a blowout victory over the Jets, but he still managed 59 yards and a touchdown. Jordan Wilkins had nine carries, but that’s likely because of the lopsided score. If the game isn’t a blowout, Taylor should get a full workload, and should thrive behind a great offensive line.

This week, Taylor faces a Bears defense that has been great against the pass, but ranks 29th in aFPA to opposing running backs. The Bears offense has also struggled, while the Colts defense has been stout, so expect a full workload for Taylor, which should equal solid RB1 numbers. Start him in all formats.

IND RB Jonathan Taylor - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. New York Jets

Jonathan Taylor didn’t disappoint in his first start last week. He put up 101 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries in a victory over the Vikings. Taylor also caught two balls for nine yards, and was targeted one more time than Nyheim Hines, surprisingly. Taylor should continue to get 20-plus touches per game with Marlon Mack out for the season, and that should make him an elite fantasy option in all league formats moving forward.

This week, he’ll face a Jets defense that gave up 182 rushing yards to the 49ers last week in a blowout loss. The Jets look terrible in every facet of the game, and if the Colts get up early on them, it could be a busy day for Taylor once again. He’s a must-start in all league formats and should be in for elite fantasy numbers.

IND RB Jonathan Taylor - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Minnesota Vikings

Jonathan Taylor only had nine carries for 22 yards against the Jaguars last week, but he added six receptions and 67 yards receiving, turning in a solid all-around debut, especially considering he split time with Marlon Mack and Nyheim Hines. With Mack now out for the season, Taylor should see a huge boon to his workload, giving him tremendous upside for the rest of the season.

The Vikings gave up a combined 139 yards and a touchdown to the Packers’ running backs last week and struggled across the board defensively as Aaron Rodgers torched them for four touchdown passes. While the Vikings should be better than that, it’s encouraging as a matchup for the Colts. If Indianapolis can keep the game close or get out ahead and wind up giving Taylor 15-plus touches, he should at least put up RB2 numbers. With the depth chart less murky, Taylor is an excellent start for Week 2.
