Scouting report

by Steve Andress

WAS WR Josh Doctson - 2017 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

The former first round-pick out of Baylor is now listed as a starter on Washington's depth chart with the departure of Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson in free agency. Doctson's size (6-foot-2) could also make him a new red zone target for Kirk Cousins, who regressed in that area from 2015 to 2016.

Fantasy Downside

Doctson missed all but two games last season, which means nobody really knows if he is any good in an offense with three established weapons in this league—Terrelle Pryor, Jamison Crowder, and Jordan Reed.

2017 Bottom Line

Doctson is a deep sleeper in best-ball leagues. It's hard to envision enough week-to-week consistency in redraft leagues. In those formats, it's best to take a wait-and-see approach.

WAS WR Josh Doctson - 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Josh Doctson has all the tools to be a top receiver. He's coming off a college career where he caught 180 balls for 2,785 yards and 29 TDs. He's 6-2 and considered an excellent route runner, good catcher with solid hands and enough speed for the outside. There's a chance Doctson could jump right into the mix for the Skins this year. Washington is a team that struggled to run the ball a year ago, and some expect the same to happen this year which means they'll turn to the pass and at that point it may be hard to keep Doctson off the field.

Fantasy Downside
Doctson is part of a crowd in Washington at WR. DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon should garner most of the targets and Jamison Crowder also proved to be reliable last season when needed. Doctson is also coming off a late-season wrist injury in 2015 which may have some impact on him. Some say his college numbers are inflated because of the offense. Don't forget, Jordan Reed is another big target so even if Doctson is on the field as a third WR, he's likely the fourth target.

Bottom Line
It seems like the team is going to groom Doctson this year, so he may not have an immediate impact. However, Jackson is known to be injury prone so maybe Doctson eventually sees a bump in playing time sooner than later. For now, Doctson is probably third on the depth chart. He's ranked 65th on our list but has an ADP of the 11th round, that's a good 6-7 earlier than guys around him in our ranking like Jermaine Kearse (64th, 18.05 ADP) and Mike Wallace (67th, 17.02 ADP). Owners are obviously banking on Doctson having a bigger role, but guys like Vincent Jackson, Travis Benjamin and Josh Gordon, who also have 11th round ADPs, may prove to have more value.
