Sims-Walker comes alive
Mike Sims-Walker didn't catch a pass in either of the Jaguars' two wins, and had just 12 receptions on the season heading into Sunday's game.
He was blanked in the first half by the Bills before catching all four of his passes in the third quarter, including a seven-yard touchdown pass, which broke a 20-20 tie.
"I'm not frustrated at all,'' he said. "I love Jacksonville. I love my coaches, my teammates. I love the city, man. I just said I'd like to be more involved in the offense. We're winning We're 3-2 right now. That's all that matters. I didn't say I was upset. I want to be in Jacksonville making plays.''
Scobee still without miss
Josh Scobee, who made five field goals in the first four games, including the 59-yard game winner against Indianapolis last week, added five more from 40, 49, 34, 40 and 46 yards.
Scobee has yet to miss this year, though his 40-yard kick barely sailed inside the upright.
Jones-Drew hurt, returns
Maurice Jones-Drew left the game in the second half with a wrist injury, but returned.
"It scared me,'' Del Rio said. "I ran out there and he was in pain and he doesn't usually say much. He's very tough. I was concerned, but whatever was going on subsided and he wanted to go back in.''
Jones-Drew usually downplays his injuries, and when was asked what it was, said: "I don't know. It's been a tough season with injuries so far and just trying to stay healthy.''
Matt Ryan , Michael Turner and Tony Gonzalez wore shorts and T-shirts on the sideline. So did David Garrard , Maurice Jones-Drew and Mike Sims-Walker. They had plenty of company, too.
Atlanta and Jacksonville rested most of their starters and all their stars during Thursday night's preseason finale, giving backups a final chance to make an impression.
No one really stood out.
Fullback Brock Bolen scored on a 16-yard run, Josh Scobee kicked two field goals and the Jaguars beat the Falcons 13-9.
Jacksonville backup quarterback Luke McCown showed his team the way to the end zone and a 19-13 preseason victory over Tampa Bay Saturday night.
Jacksonville moved the ball consistently with starter David Garrard at quarterback. But it settled for field goals on three promising drives and had its best possession of the night turned back by a goal-line interception that linebacker Barrett Ruud returned 80 yards to set up Tampa Bay’s only touchdown.
Garrard played into the third quarter and completed 24 of 31 passes for 211 yards and one interception. He completed 15 of his first 17 passes for 134 yards and was 4 of 4 in marching the Jaguars into scoring position.
McCown gave the Jaguars some relief from their frustration, throwing a 27-yard TD pass to John Matthews on his first attempt of the night to put Jacksonville up 16-13 late in the third quarter. Josh Scobee’s fourth field goal provided the final margin of victory.
The Jaguars played without running back Maurice Jones-Drew, who sat out three days of practice last week and did not make the trip to Tampa. The Pro Bowler’s agent said the fifth-year pro is not injured and that the Jaguars were holding him out of the final two preseason games for "precautionary reasons."
Jacksonville was also without all three starting linebackers — Daryl Smith, Kirk Morrison and Justin Durant. Tight end Marcedes Lewis left in the first half with a sprained ankle and did not return.
FFTOC - The Closing Rush
This is the final weekend of the FFTOC's November contest, and a number of players have favorable matchups that could help your team post big points. Here's are some of the best options at each position:
QB - The guidelines for this position were set early in the 2009 season and there was a designated list of "stud" quarterbacks and everyone else was considered a "non-stud" quarterback. Brett Favre had a sluggish start and was looking like a caretaker fantasy quarterback, so he didn't make the studs list. But Brett has been playing like one lately and should do some damage against a very shaky Seattle secondary. Carson Palmer, Eli Manning, David Garrard, and Vince Young are other non-studs worth considering. As far as the studs go, Drew Brees likely will light up the Buccaneers, Peyton Manning is Peyton Manning, and guys like Roethlisberger and Warner have easy opponents. Aaron Rodgers and Matt Schaub are also on track to perform well.
RB - If you haven't used Maurice Jones-drew yet, you are in luck as he draws Buffalo's feeble run defense. Adrian Peterson, Ray Rice, and Chris Johnson have lofty expectations and can easily exceed them, while Rashard Mendenhall and Pierre Thomas will be running against weak defenses. One-week wonders could include Kevin Smith, Bernard Scott, and Jason Snelling.
WR - The usual suspects are the top plays this week - guys like Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne, and Larry Fitzgerald. In New England's game against the Jets in week two, Randy Moss was shut down, but the Jets were vulnerable underneath to unheralded Julian Edelman, who was playing because Wes Welker was out with an injury. Moss should do better this time around, but Welker will be playing and looks poised to have a big game. Marques Colston's been in a bit of a slump, but ought to wake up against Tampa Bay. Additionally, Hines Ward, Chad Ochocinco, and Vincent Jackson have upside for this week.
TE - Dallas Clark, Antonio Gates, and Tony Gonzalez are great plays this week as they almost always are, but if you are looking for some "sleepers" Greg Olsen, Jeremy Shockey, Heath Miller, and Kellen Winslow could deliver the goods. Vernon Davis and Brent Celek are two others to watch.
K - Stephen Gostkowski and David Akers are the top choices for this week, with Nate Kaeding, Josh Scobee, Ryan Longwell, Lawrence Tynes, and Neil Rackers right behind them.
Good luck to everyone! It's been a fun four weeks and it will be very interesting to see how the final round of the contest shakes out.
