RB Michael Bush Will Have Surgery, Could Play Opening Day

Oakland Raiders running back Michael Bush will undergo surgery on his broken left thumb Monday and could be back in time for the season opener.

Bush broke the thumb when he was hit on the hand by a helmet on his final carry Saturday night against San Francisco. Coach Tom Cable said Sunday there was a "good chance" Bush would be ready to play Sept. 12 in Tennessee and that he would likely not need a cast on the finger.

Bush led the team with 589 yards rushing last season and was expected to do even more this season now that Justin Fargas has been released. Bush and Darren McFadden will share the bulk of the running load this season, although both have now been hampered by injuries in the preseason.

Fantasy Impact: 

If you still have a draft, Bush is relatively safe to take. Even if he's not available for the opener, this doesn't sound like an injury that will derail him for a long period of time.

Redskins Still Interested In RB Brian Westbrook

The Redskins have been through their first preseason game and got a good look at young running backs Ryan Torain and Keiland Williams. But Coach Mike Shanahan said after Sunday's practice that the club remains interested in veteran free agent Brian Westbrook.

"Like I told you, I'm not sure what direction he's going," Shanahan said. "But we've been entertaining that option. I'm not sure what direction he's going at this time."

Shanahan said there is no timetable for action. ESPN's John Clayton suggested late last week that Westbrook was likely headed to St. Louis by Monday, a claim the Rams denied. St. Louis, though, is one team that has remained interested in pursuing the former Philadelphia Eagle throughout his free agency. Denver, another potential suitor because of a backfield decimated by injuries, last week signed veteran Justin Fargas.

The Redskins rushed for 140 yards on 41 carries in Friday night's 42-17 preseason victory over Buffalo. Torain (17 carries, 62 yards) and Williams (11 carries, 51 yards, two touchdowns) got the bulk of the work. Veteran Larry Johnson is scheduled to get his chance this Saturday against Baltimore, with fellow veteran free agent signee Willie Parker playing more the following week against the New York Jets.

Fantasy Impact: 

If you've got three backs on your roster that are past their prime, why not add a fourth? Westbrook could help Washington, especially due to his past connection with Donovan McNabb, but he's not going to be the fantasy star he used to be no matter where he goes.

His body is sore, his mind spinning with visions of a new playbook dancing in his head, but Denver running back Justin Fargas couldn't be happier.

The veteran, who was on the practice field Wednesday for the first time with the Broncos, is hoping to get some work Sunday night in the team's preseason opener at Cincinnati.

"They're going to keep it pretty basic for me, things I can handle, but I'll continue to progress in the preseason," Fargas said Friday. "I do feel good, but it's different than just working out on your own. You have to get your body used to it. You've got some pain and soreness to work through, but you expect it."

With the Broncos not expected to take Knowshon Moreno (hamstring), Correll Buckhalter (neck/back) or LenDale White (left leg) on the trip because of injuries, they figure to start Lance Ball in the backfield.

Lately, Ball has gotten the most work with the starters, including some in Friday morning's practice. Fargas, as well as Bruce Hall, could be in the game fairly quickly.

Fargas, who had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee earlier this year and was released by the Raiders, worked out for several teams before signing with the Broncos. Fargas rushed for a career-best 1,009 yards for the Raiders in 2007, but the total dropped to 491 in 2009 as he split time with Darren McFadden and Michael Bush.
