Scouting report

LAC QB Justin Herbert - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Washington

Justin Herbert enjoyed a rookie season for the ages in 2021, setting a host of records along the way. Once he ascended to the starting gig in Week 2 against the Chiefs, Herbert averaged 289.1 passing yards, 2.1 touchdowns and 25.2 fantasy points per game. But he faces a difficult start to his first full season as the starter against Washington. Ron Rivera's charges allowed the second-fewest passing yards and touchdowns per game a year ago, with only four teams intercepting more passes than Washington. They blitzed at the 13th highest rate in the NFL, sending extra rushers on 32.4% of their defensive plays. Herbert's matchup is the seventh hardest of the week according to our projections. But we should not abandon all hope, especially if Washington does decide to blitz him. Last season, Pro Football Focus had Herbert ranked No.1 among all quarterbacks against the blitz, tossing 1,468 yards and 13 touchdowns against just two interceptions.

LAC QB Justin Herbert - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Justin Herbert became the first Chargers' player to win Offensive Rookie of the Year honors since 1974. Herbert, as the sixth overall selection, was the third quarterback off the board behind Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa. Instead of Tyrod Taylor, it was Herbert who ended up stepping into the big shoes of Philip Rivers and the rookie proved more than capable of replacing the Chargers' great. Herbert set NFL rookie records for total touchdowns (36), passing touchdowns (31), completions (396), multi-passing touchdown games (10), games with 300 yards passing (eight) and three-passing touchdown games (six). He was just 39 yards short of besting Andrew Luck's rookie record of 4,374 yards passing. The good news? Herbert knows, even after an impressive rookie campaign, there are plenty of areas of his game to improve. "I think if I know more about defenses, coverages, pressures, all of that, I think that better helps our team," he said.

Fantasy Downside
With a new coach in Brandon Staley and new coordinator in Joe Lombardi, Herbert will be learning his second offense in two seasons. Similar changes have hindered other young QBs in the past from making the next leap.

2021 Bottom Line
We're not all that worried about the downside. Look for his talent, aggressive approach, an upgraded offensive line and a strong supporting cast to help Herbert overcome the change-related challenges he faces.

LAC QB Justin Herbert - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Kansas City

Herbert a rough game last week against the Denver Broncos as he completed 21-of-33 passes for 253 yards and one touchdown. A down week from the QB1 numbers we typically expect from the rookie, it appears teams are catching onto the young QB. Even though Herbert is not as sharp as he was earlier this season, he’ll be ending the regular season against the team he broke out against.

The Kansas City Chiefs rank 25th in aFPA to QBs this season, and in their Week 2 matchup, Herbert threw for 311 yards and had two total touchdowns. Playing without Keenan Allen and Hunter Henry in this one, Herbert will have a tough time posting high-end numbers with his current cast of WRs. Expect low-end QB1 numbers from him this week.

LAC QB Justin Herbert - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs Denver

Herbert had a solid performance last week against the Las Vegas Raiders as he completed 22-of-32 passes for 314 yards, two touchdowns and ran for 14 yards and an additional touchdown. What a relief this performance was! Herbert had three straight games of less than 16 fantasy points (4pt-PaTD) and was starting to string together “rookie” performances. With a platoon of injured players, Herbert was able to have a solid week and even won the game in overtime on a QB sneak for his final TD.

Week 16 brings on a familiar foe in the Denver Broncos who currently rank 11th in aFPA to QBs this season. Herbert had a mixed game last time out against Denver in Week 8 as he threw for 278 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. The rookie signal caller will be without crucial weapons in Hunter Henry and Mike Williams, and potentially Keenan Allen who will be a game-time decision. Still, Herbert should be counted on as a low-end QB1 in the fantasy title game.

LAC QB Justin Herbert - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Las Vegas

Herbert had a solid game last week against the Atlanta Falcons, as he completed 36-of-44 passes for 243 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. A good game for most rookie QBs, but a slightly disappointing one for Herbert given the amount of success the potential ROTY has had coupled with how terrible the Atlanta defense has been all season.

In the semifinals of the fantasy football plays, Herbert takes on the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday Night Football. Las Vegas ranks 23rd in aFPA to QBs this season and gave up one of Herbert’s better games of the year during Week 9 as he threw for 326 yards and two touchdowns, and also had 34 rushing yards. The Raider defense has been downright awful and is just a few days removed from firing their defensive coordinator, so everything seems to be falling into place for Herbert. Start him with confidence this week as he is sure to produce solid QB1 numbers.

LAC QB Justin Herbert - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs Atlanta

Herbert had by far the worst game of his young career last week against the New England Patriots as he completed 15-of-31 passes for 209 yards, two interceptions and zero touchdowns. Yikes. Amid a turbulent year for the Patriots, Bill Belichick’s renowned prowess for crushing rookie QBs got lost in the shuffle, but boy was that coaching on full display in this one. This game marked Herbert’s second-lowest yardage total of the season and the first time this year he has gone scoreless, truly a disaster scenario for fantasy managers leaning on their QB1 in the regular-season finale.

Week 14 brings a shot of redemption for Herbert, and what better way to do so than against the Atlanta Falcons who ranked 22nd in aFPA to QBs this season. Herbert’s last two outings have been rough, averaging 262.5 yards while amassing three interceptions to only one touchdown. More a product of poor coaching than hitting the proverbial “rookie wall,” Herbert has shown more than enough talent this season to overcome poor playcalling. Herbert should be fired up as a high-end QB1 in this one and is poised to have major success in the fantasy playoffs with subsequent matchups against Las Vegas and Denver.

LAC QB Justin Herbert - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs New England

Herbert had one of his worst games of the season last week against Buffalo as he completed 31-of-52 passes for 316 yards, one touchdown and one interception. This game was a let down for many reasons, with the most glaring being Herbert’s production despite having the most pass attempts of his career in a game where he had a full arsenal of weapons with the return of Austin Ekeler. There were lots of questionable playcalling in this one, especially towards the end of the game, however fantasy managers should be content with Herbert’s opportunities.

Week 13 brings one of the toughest challenges in Herbert’s young career as he takes on the New England Patriots who rank 4th in aFPA to QBs this season. The Patriots are fresh off shutting out MVP candidate Kyler Murray who was left scoreless for the first time this season, so New England poses a serious threat to Herbert’s fantasy production. However, this team has proven to go as far as Herbert will take it and that means plenty of opportunity for the rookie. In what is the final regular-season game of most fantasy leagues, trust Herbert as a QB1 to get you where you need to go.
