MIN WR Justin Jefferson - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Justin Jefferson has quickly established himself as one of the premier wide receivers in the NFL. In his third season in 2022, Jefferson led the league in fantasy points scored, was third in yards per route run (2.70), and third in expected fantasy points per game (21.7). With the departure of Adam Thielen, Jefferson's target share could increase even further. Despite scoring only eight touchdowns in 2022, two fewer than in his rookie season, Jefferson's high volume of targets and red-zone opportunities combine to mean there's a good chance we could see positive touchdown regression in 2023.

Fantasy Downside
Jefferson's elite talent and the volume of targets he is expected to receive should help mitigate any perceived risk. It seems like the only thing that could slow him down would be an injury. Even a breakout season from another pass-catcher shouldn't slow Jefferson down.

2023 Bottom Line
Jefferson is a top-tier wide receiver for the 2023 fantasy season. His high volume of targets, red-zone opportunities, and proven production make him a valuable asset. We currently have him ranked as the overall WR1 for 2023. He's worth considering as the first pick in your draft. His potential to finish as the overall WR1 is very high.

MIN WR Justin Jefferson - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Green Bay Packers
Justin Jefferson now has an insane 47 targets over his last three games. He has finished as a top-three weekly fantasy option amongst wide receivers in four of the Vikings' last five games. Jefferson is rapidly approaching Calvin Johnson's single-season (16-game) yardage record, needing 208 yards over the final two weeks of the season to match Megatron's number from 2012. Needless to say, with stats and skills like that matchups don't really matter much. Jefferson gets the mediocre Green Bay secondary this week, and even a matchup against Jaire Alexander is not nearly enough to seriously dock Jefferson's fantasy projection. He is the top receiver play of the week and will likely win some managers a fantasy title due to his historic third season.

MIN WR Justin Jefferson - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. New York Giants
Unsurprisingly, Justin Jefferson was a huge part of the Vikings' comeback against the Colts in Week 15. Jefferson saw a whopping 16 targets from comeback-mode Kirk Cousins and caught 12 of them for 123 yards and a score. Jefferson has finished as one of fantasy's top-three wide receivers in four of his last six games. He is posting elite numbers in virtually every advanced metric for wideouts (2.93 yards per route run and 10.3 yards per target), and continues to lead the league in traditional counting stats like targets, receptions, receiving yards, and fantasy points per game. The Giants boast a mediocre defense that will have plenty of issues putting a lid on Jefferson's elite talent. He is once again an elite WR1 in Week 16, just like he is every week.

MIN WR Justin Jefferson - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Indianapolis Colts
How do you finish as the week's overall WR1 without scoring a touchdown? How about going off for 11 catches and a Vikings franchise-record 223 yards through the air. Oh, and it should have been closer to 250 yards plus a score but the referees inexplicably ruled Jefferson stepped out of bounds after a long catch when it appears he did not actually touch the line. The Colts have an above-average defense against opposing receivers, but slowing Jefferson down has proven to be a monumental task for any secondary this season. Jefferson boasts a 30.4% target share, leads the league in targets and receiving yards (and has a realistic shot at challenging Calvin Johnson's yardage record), and ranks second in the league with 99 catches on the year. He is an easy WR1 in fantasy every week regardless of opponent or scoring format.

MIN WR Justin Jefferson - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Detroit Lions
Justin Jefferson had his worst game of the season in Week 3 against the Lions when he faced off with Jeff Okudah (and plenty of double teams) and only netted three catches for 14 yards. It will be incredibly difficult for the Lions to repeat their defensive effort against Jefferson a second time in Week 14, especially with Okudah now missing practice due to an illness. The Lions still have one of the league's worst pass defenses, and Jefferson managers should not be discouraged off a single-game sample from over two months ago. Jefferson is an elite talent and gets a great matchup this week. He is a locked-in WR1 and one of the top plays at his position against Detroit on Sunday.

MIN WR Justin Jefferson - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. New York Jets
The Patriots were Justin Jefferson's latest victim on Thanksgiving when he burnt them for nine catches, 139 yards, and a touchdown on 11 targets. Through 12 weeks, Jefferson ranks top-five at his position in: targets, receptions, receiving yards, yards after the catch, and fantasy points per game. Week 13 sets up an awesome showdown between Jefferson and the Jets' rookie phenom at cornerback, Sauce Gardner. Sauce has shown plenty of juice at the pro level even as a rookie, but Jefferson is more than a handful for any corner in the league. This is a difficult matchup, but no one in their right mind is benching Jefferson in fantasy.

MIN WR Justin Jefferson - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. New England Patriots
Justin Jefferson had a slow day in Week 11 as the Vikings got completely boat raced by the Cowboys and eventually pulled their starters in the second half. Jefferson's 3-33-0 line is obviously a deviation from his normal production, and the Vikings are not likely to get dominated to the same extent by the Patriots in Week 12. The Patriots still boast a solid defense and have been slightly above average against opposing receivers this season, but that is not the type of matchup to cause concern for a player of Jefferson's caliber. Shake off the Vikings' miserable Week 11 performance and keep Jefferson in starting lineups as a no-doubt WR1 for fantasy.
