Scouting report

NO TE Juwan Johnson - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Carolina Panthers

Juwan Johnson has started becoming more involved in the offense, seeing seven targets last week against the Buccaneers and seeing 20 more snaps than Adam Trautman. He has yet to find the end zone and is no better than the No. 3 option for Jameis Winston, who is still dealing with back issues. Johnson is a low-end TE2 against the Panthers.

NO TE Juwan Johnson - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Juwan Johnson was actually third on the Saints in targets last week against the Falcons, with five. However, he only caught two of those targets. There's also some guy named Taysom Hill floating around to take some work away from Johnson at the end tight end position. There's really not much to work with here right now.

NO TE Juwan Johnson - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Patriots

Juwan Johnson's snap count jumped from 19% in Week 1 to 41% in Week 2, creating a near-split with Adam Trautman last week. Could this be a signal the Saints are going to transition more toward Johnson? Or at least an even split with Trautman going forward? What also played in Johnson's favor in Week 2 was he again saw three targets, while Trautman was shut out. Part of that could be the Saints taking it easy with Trautman, though Trautman played 82% of the snaps in Week 1. This is like New England's tight end situation, except the ceilings of the two tight ends are much lower at this point than those of Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry. Johnson is a deep TE2 option in Week 3.

NO TE Juwan Johnson - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Panthers

Probably not many fantasy players benefited from Juwan Johnson's two touchdown grabs in Week 1. While he posted a nice fantasy day, he only saw 12 offensive snaps while Adam Trautman played 51. That said, Johnson was the early favorite in the red zone for Jameis Winston, with both touchdowns coming from that area. If that continues, Johnson has deeper league potential.

NO TE Juwan Johnson - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs Packers

Injuries to Adam Trautman and Nick Vannett have opened the door for the former Penn State wide receiver to get his opportunity as one of the Saints' tight ends. Adam Trautman looks like he'll be ready for Week 1, as he did not appear on the Saints' initial injury report for Week 1. We currently have Johnson No. 23 among tight ends this week and Trautman at No. 35 as we wait to see how the Saints work Trautman back in while also using Johnson. Probably best to steer clear of both for this week until we get some more clarity on the offense.
