The last preseason game is part ending — of training camp — and part beginning — of the regular season.
And the Broncos close out the preseason tonight, trying to walk the line between staying healthy and being ready. Unlike Mike Shanahan, who often kept his starters and top backups out of the preseason finale, Broncos coach Josh McDaniels figures to play some of his starters well into the first quarter against the Minnesota Vikings.
"Last year we played them a decent chunk in the first quarter," McDaniels said. "We don't put a play limit on them. There are some players that we want to see — if they can play this week. They're going to play and they're going to play more than three or four plays."
McDaniels did not play quarterback Kyle Orton in last year's preseason finale. Former No. 3 quarterback Tom Brandstater threw 30 passes in a 19-0 victory over the Cardinals. Orton missed the game with a finger injury. Then-No. 2 quarterback Chris Simms didn't play because of a sprained ankle, but the bulk of the starters played deep into the first quarter.
McDaniels said he hopes to play all healthy players some, so Orton should get a handful of snaps.
Left tackle Ryan Clady, who has returned to practice after offseason knee surgery, is expected to play at least some snaps against the Vikings, and running back Knowshon Moreno said Tuesday he hopes to play some as well.
QBs
Jake Delhomme’s preseason passer rating is 110.5. He is fourth in the NFL behind Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Kyle Orton.
Seneca Wallace’s passer rating is high, 103.0, even though he has completed just half of his 26 passes. He benefits from averaging 8.8 yards per passing attempt (Delhomme is at 7.2) and a 3-to-1 touchdowns-to-interceptions ratio.
Through three games, the Browns lead their opponents 703-542 in passing yards. In the 2010 regular season, opponents led the Browns 3,915-2,076.
Delhomme was sharp in preseason game No. 3, going 20-of-25 for 152 yards, a touchdown and a 105.3 rating. That encouraging work is tempered by this bit of recent history: In his third preseason game last year, Brady Quinn went 11-of-15 for 128 yards, a touchdown and a 121.0 rating in a win over Tennessee.
RBs
Jerome Harrison has rushed 23 times for 72 yards. He is not concerned about his 3.1 per-carry average.
“I’m where I want to be,” he said, “besides the fumble.”
He was talking about a fumble that was recovered and returned for a touchdown Saturday. He also lost a fumble in the previous game.
Peyton Hillis leads the Browns in carries with 21. He is averaging 3.8 yards. James Davis has averaged 3.4 yards on 11 carries.
The Browns are looking for a back who can average closer to 4.5. That is one reason they are eager to get rookie Round 2 pick Montario Hardesty in a preseason game. He has missed the first three games but has not been ruled out of Thursday’s game against Chicago.
Pittsburgh's QB Dennis Dixon finished 9 of 16 for 94 yards, two interceptions and a pair of sacks by Robert Ayers .
"He didn't play well," Tomlin said. "And a lot of guys didn't."
Rookie cornerback Perrish Cox picked off one of Dixon's passes in the end zone and Andre' Goodman returned Dixon's second interception 77 yards for a touchdown with 11 seconds left in the second quarter that gave Denver a 17-3 halftime lead.
Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton almost had his night shortened by a big hit from linebacker James Harrison .
After Harrison picked up a loose ball and rumbled toward the end zone in the second quarter, Orton tried to tackle him low but Harrison put his helmet down and hit Orton on the back of the head and his left shoulder.
While Orton was down, the officials huddled and ruled the play was an incomplete pass. Brady Quinn replaced Orton and was sacked on the next snap. Orton returned to the game on the Broncos' next series.
Orton finished 9-for-14 for 80 yards with one interception, by William Gay .
Rookie Tim Tebow made his home debut for Denver after missing last week's game with bruised ribs. He had mixed results, throwing an interception that set up Jonathan Dwyer 's 5-yard TD run and then driving Denver 74 yards in five plays, capped by a 3-yard scoring strike to Eric Decker .
Unlike in his pro debut at Cincinnati when he was hurt on a 7-yard dart into the end zone as time expired, Tebow was a pocket passer on this night with no designed runs or scrambles.
The Broncos rushed for just 75 yards on 20 carries against the Lions.
At halftime of Saturday's game, with the starting unit playing the entire time, the Broncos had but 20 yards on eight carries on the ground; and in some ways, it could be argued that quarterback Kyle Orton, who scrambled his way out of some potential trouble, was Denver's best rusher. The fact that it was the second consecutive game the team struggled with the run — the Broncos' average of 55.5 yards rushing in the two contests ranks 30th in the 32-team NFL — with less than three weeks remaining before the season opener at Jacksonville makes that argument somewhat troubling.
The solution might be as easy as getting some of the injured players back on the field. However, Knowshon Moreno, who injured a hamstring at the start of training camp, isn't expected to return to the huddle anytime soon. Neither is Correll Buckhalter, out with a lower back injury.
Next in line in the backfield would be LenDale White. Given the injury woes, it's clear there's an opportunity to be had, but the former Chatfield High School star has a sprained ankle and has barely been on the field since he was picked up at the beginning of the month.
