Scouting report

ARI QB Kyler Murray - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at San Francisco 49ers

Kyler Murray is coming off a solid rookie season where he threw for 3,722 yards and 20 touchdowns, and ran for an additional 544 yards and four touchdowns. He has a bright future ahead of him with a pass-happy coach and a nice supporting cast that just got infinitely better with the addition of DeAndre Hopkins via trade. The Cardinals’ offense will run through the pass under Cliff Kingsbury, so the upside is significant with the mobile sophomore.

It’s not an easy start to the season for Murray however. The 49ers were 10th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks last season and have a fearsome pass rush, despite the loss of DeForest Buckner. Murray accounted for five touchdowns in two games against the 49ers last season, but also threw for just 391 combined yards. Murray is still a start, largely due to the impact he can have with his legs, but temper expectations in a tough matchup. We have him ranked as a fringe starter in 1QB leagues.

ARI QB Kyler Murray - 2020 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
The No. 1 overall pick laid claim to 2019 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, and lived up to the hype that prompted Arizona to deal former first-round pick Josh Rosen last offseason. Kyler Murray's unique skills flourished under first-year HC Kliff Kingsbury, and Murray led all rookies in completions and passing yards. His 349 completions were the third-most by a rookie in NFL history. In addition to the solid passing totals, Murray added 544 rushing yards and four running scores.

Fantasy Downside
The rookie's dazzling play was especially impressive behind an offensive line that struggled at times. Murray was sacked 48 times, tied for most in the NFL with Matt Ryan, and that number could have been even higher if not for the young QB's quick trigger and improved escapability as the season wore on.

2020 Bottom Line
Looking forward, there's reason to expect even more. As ESPN's Mike Clay noted, after scoring two or fewer offensive touchdowns during their first five games, the Cardinals' offense managed at least three touchdowns in eight of Arizona's final 11 games last season. The Cardinals scored 53% of their touchdowns through the air, but play calling suggests it should've been closer to 63%. Murray's enhanced play down the stretch leaves him as a solid QB1 with upside heading into his second season as a pro. The addition of one of the best receivers in the game, DeAndre Hopkins, won't hurt.

ARI QB Kyler Murray - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Los Angeles Rams

Kyler Murray was held to just 118 yards and a touchdown against the Seahawks last week, although he did add 40 yards on the ground. The Cardinals ran the ball effectively and led for virtually the whole game, giving Murray very little motivation to throw much. He’s been inconsistent throughout the year, at times showing brilliance, while being hesitant and looking overwhelmed at other times. His continued development will be something to watch eagerly next season, and he’d like to go out on a high note this week after winning his last two games.

The Rams rank 11th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks this season and they just held Jimmy Garoppolo to 248 yards, a touchdown and two picks last week, so this won’t be an easy matchup for Murray. He struggled against the Rams just four games ago, throwing for 163 yards and an interception, although he did run in a touchdown in a lopsided defeat. Murray’s questionable hamstring and difficult matchup make him risky to start in the championship, despite his ground production providing a nice floor for him in most weeks. If you can find someone healthier and in a good matchup, it might be wise to look elsewhere. We have him as a fringe-starter this week.

ARI QB Kyler Murray - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Seattle Seahawks

Kyler Murray had 219 yards, a touchdown and a pick against the Browns last week, though he did get his first win in eight games behind four rushing touchdowns from Kenyan Drake. Murray added 56 yards rushing, giving him a solid fantasy day overall, albeit an unspectacular one. Murray now has 504 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, giving him a nice floor in most weeks due to his dual-threat ability.

This week, Murray faces a Seahawks defense that has largely tightened up over the second half of the season and now ranks ninth in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. Murray struggled against Seattle earlier this season, although he did score a rushing touchdown when they last met. Murray is a high-floor player with upside and we have him ranked as a fringe starter, just outside our top 10 this week.

ARI QB Kyler Murray - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Cleveland Browns

Kyler Murray struggled against the Steelers last week with only 194 yards passing, adding only two more yards on six rushing attempts. He threw a pair of touchdowns but also threw three interceptions in the Cardinals’ sixth consecutive loss. Murray now has under 200 yards passing in each of his past three games, although he’s added rushing touchdowns twice in that span.

Murray should get back on track this week against a Browns defense that’s without Myles Garrett for the remainder of the season. The Browns rank 23rd in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks this year and let the Bengals drop 19 points on them last week. Murray is ranked just inside our top-10 and is a viable starter in all league formats.

ARI QB Kyler Murray - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Kyler Murray salvaged an otherwise terrible fantasy day with a rushing touchdown last week, but 163 passing yards and a pick is very concerning for fantasy owners looking toward the playoffs. Murray’s floor is high because of his work on the ground, but he doesn’t have the easiest schedule over the rest of the season, so fantasy owners should be wary of trusting him for the stretch run.

This week, he faces a Steelers defense that ranks fourth in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks this season and just held the Browns to 13 points and Baker Mayfield to 196 yards. Murray should be started with caution as a QB2 or a fringe QB1 this week in a tough matchup, and fantasy owners with better options should look elsewhere if possible.

ARI QB Kyler Murray - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Los Angeles Rams

Kyler Murray only threw for 150 yards against the 49ers before the bye last week, but he threw a pair of touchdowns and added 67 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Murray has accounted for multiple touchdowns in three straight contests now and he leads the team in rushing with 418 yards. Murray has shown flashes of the type of dual-threat quarterback he can be throughout the year and the team has been super competitive in the past three games, losing them by a combined 16 points.

This week, Murray faces a Rams defense that ranks 20th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks this year and just got torched by the Ravens for five touchdown passes. Expect a lot of offense in this game with Murray likely to put up big numbers. The Cardinals can’t stop anyone and their passing game has looked alive as the season has progressed. That should mean good things for Murray, who should be active in all lineups.
