Saints Promote RB DeShawn Wynn from Practice Squad

Running back DeShawn Wynn is being promoted to the New Orleans Saints' active roster.

Pierre Thomas is questionable with an ankle injury, so the Saints needed to add some depth behind him to work in behind Chris Ivory and Ladell Betts.

Wynn was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round of the 2007 NFL draft after playing collegiately at Florida.

Wynn rushed for 2,077 yards and 25 touchdowns at Florida, but battled injuries with the Packers.

He finished his rookie season with 203 yards and four touchdowns, but finished the year on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

In 2008, the 5-foot-10, 232-pounder rushed for 110 yards on eight carries. That included a 73-yard touchdown run against the Detroit Lions.

In four games last season, Wynn rushed for 19 yards on six carries.

Fantasy Impact:

This could be interpreted as a bad sign for the availability of Pierre Thomas this weekend. Wynn isn't worth claiming off the waiver wire, as young Chris Ivory and veteran Ladell Betts will probably do most of the running if Thomas is out.

Saints RB Pierre Thomas (ankle questionable) took limited reps Friday. It was initially being reported that Thomas missed Friday completely, but that was not correct. HC Sean Peyton noted that Thomas is progressing quickly, but is a game-time decision in a great matchup with the Panthers. Ladell Betts has been getting the majority of the first-team reps in practice this week, and will likely draw the start and heavier workload if Thomas can't go. Undrafted rookie Chris Ivory would also be in the mix, and is the favorite for goal-line touches. Neither is a safe fantasy play. Lance Moore and Jeremy Shockey also figure to see increased looks from Drew Brees if Thomas misses.

Saints RB Pierre Thomas did not practice with a left ankle injury. But Thomas has not been ruled out of Sunday's game at Carolina. Payton wants to see how he progresses as the week goes on. Backup Chris Ivory fully practiced on Wednesday as he continues to recover from a knee injury. He and veteran Ladell Betts could pick up extra carries if Thomas can't play. DeShawn Wynn could also be activated from the practice squad.
