OAK RB Latavius Murray - Week 2, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Anyone who had Latavius Murray in a PPR league last Sunday was the beneficiary of Oakland’s decision to deactivate Roy Helu. Murray caught seven passes for 36 yards. He also added 44 yards on the ground, but his overall day was somewhat disappointing. The Raiders were crushed 33-13 by Cincinnati, limiting Murray’s carries. Even worse, Murray gave way to Marcel Reece in garbage time, and Reece caught two touchdown passes.

Unfortunately for Murray, a tough matchup lies ahead. Baltimore held Denver to 69 rushing yards in week one. The Ravens have lost Terrell Suggs for the season, but will still cause trouble for the Raiders. In fact, if you look at 4for4’s defensive rankings, you will see the Ravens in a very high place on the board. While volume will keep Murray viable this weekend, he will not approach RB1 territory. He is more of a low-level RB2.

OAK RB Latavius Murray - Week 1, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Cincinnati

Earlier this week, Oakland’s updated depth chart had a curious development at the running back position. Latavius Murray remained Oakland’s lead back, but Taiwan Jones was second on the depth chart, not Roy Helu.

While it is hard to take anything the Raiders do seriously, this is great news for Murray if it is real. Jones is the football equivalent of a mediocre NBA swingman, as he has alternated between running back and defensive back and has done neither particularly well. Helu, on the other hand, looked to be a threat to Murray’s touches, as he is a good receiver and was slated to play on passing downs. Any additional opportunities would be a boon to Murray’s already intriguing profile. He is an RB2 against Cincinnati.

OAK RB Latavius Murray - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

When teams are bad, they look for bright spots. The 2014 Oakland Raiders, in the midst of yet another losing season, were hosting the Kansas City Chiefs on a Thursday night in November. Few gave Oakland a chance to win the game. And win they did, thanks to the play of running back Latavius Murray. Murray was knocked out of the game early due to a concussion, but on just four carries, he rushed for 112 yards and two touchdowns. The Raiders looked foolish for not giving Murray a chance earlier, as they had been relying on Maurice Jones-Drew and Darren McFadden, two players in decline. Murray heads into the 2015 season as a starter and with a reputation as a fantasy sleeper. Will Latavius justify the hype?

Fantasy Upside
Outside of a rough outing against Arizona, Murray looked good in the preseason, averaging over five yards a carry against Minnesota and St. Louis. That was encouraging, as the Raiders have a new coaching staff and system. And the new staff would like a strong running game to ease the pressure on quarterback Derek Carr. Although Oakland’s offensive line is not stellar, they did acquire a good center in free agency in Rodney Hudson.

Fantasy Downside
Murray’s stock has to be downgraded in PPR leagues. Although Latavius has been an acceptable pass catcher in the past, Oakland signed Roy Helu, a strong receiver who will play a lot in passing situations. With the Raiders largely expected to spend another season in the AFC West cellar, Helu could siphon plenty of touches away from Murray. His stellar effort last year against the Chiefs was marginalized somewhat as the season progressed, as he failed to score another touchdown despite a larger role.

Bottom Line
As Nelson Muntz once put it, “he who ha ha's last ha ha's best.” Murray has the upside to enable you to “ha ha” at your league mates. His ADP continues to be in the third/fourth round range. That makes him an attractive target for fantasy owners who prefer to stock up at other positions in the first two rounds. If Murray gives you the same or more production as runners taken ahead of him (a distinct possibility) while you get stars at other spots, you could be laughing your way to a title.

OAK RB Latavius Murray - Week 17, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 – Latavius Murray at Denver Broncos

While Latavius Murray has not had an explosive game since his breakout performance against Kansas City earlier this year, his workload continues to be steady. Murray had 23 carries for 86 yards in last Sunday’s victory over Buffalo and also pulled in three passes for 22 yards. Only Detroit has a better run defense than Denver, but the Broncos were victimized by Cincinnati's Jeremy Hill and Giovanni Bernard in a Monday night loss. The performance of the Cincinnati duo hints at some upside for Murray this weekend, but the Broncos are expected to rebound in a game they have to win to capture the second seed in the AFC. Thus, Murray offers reasonable security as an RB2/flex because of volume but not much in the way of superstar potential.

OAK RB Latavius Murray - Week 16, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 – Latavius Murray vs. Buffalo Bills

The good news is that Latavius Murray continues to lead Oakland’s backfield in touches by a wide margin. The bad news is the Raiders still need to commit to getting Murray more touches. Although Oakland was handily beaten by Kansas City last weekend, the time of possession between the teams was even, suggesting Murray could have easily gotten more than 12 carries. He finished with 76 total yards.

Buffalo’s run defense has been vulnerable lately. Denver’s C.J. Anderson rushed for three touchdowns against the Bills in Week 14. And last weekend, Green Bay’s Eddie Lacy accumulated 110 total yards and scored a touchdown. There is always the risk the Raiders will do something foolish, but Murray remains planted in RB2 territory.

OAK RB Latavius Murray - Week 15, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 – Latavius Murray at Oakland Raiders
It took forever for the Raiders to wake up to the thought of using Latavius Murray as their lead back, but fortunately, they finally did. Murray got 23 carries and rushed for 77 yards in a Week 14 victory over San Francisco. As many remember, Murray dominated the Chiefs earlier in the season. When you combine his high usage level and his past success against Kansas City, he can be inserted into lineups as an RB2.

OAK RB Latavius Murray - Week 14, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 – Latavius Murray vs. San Francisco 49ers
When we last saw Latavius Murray, he was carving up the Kansas City Chiefs to the tune of 112 yards and two touchdowns back in Week 12. Unfortunately, just as Murray was having a game for the ages, he suffered a concussion and ended up missing Week 13. He is slated to return this week, but unfortunately will have to deal with a San Francisco run defense that has given up just six touchdowns and yields less than 100 yards per game. He will also have to deal with a coaching staff that insists on giving playing time to washed-up veterans Darren McFadden and Maurice Jones-Drew. Nonetheless, Murray has the highest ceiling of any player on the Oakland roster and can be used as a flex, albeit one with a capped upside thanks to the matchup.
