I’m wondering whether WR Dezmon Briscoe will be active against New Orleans instead of Leonard Hankerson.

When Shanahan considers who can help him more against the Saints this Sunday, Briscoe will have a lot going for him. He has played in 18 NFL games with 41 receptions and seven touchdowns. Hankerson’s line: 4/13/0. Briscoe had six catches for 117 yards and two touchdowns in the preseason, while Hankerson had only four catches for 32 yards. And Hankerson, at 23, is seven months older than Briscoe.

Hankerson went against some better competition early in the preseason, but Briscoe is more experienced. He stood out for quality route running, good hands and an ability to adjust to the ball, which is more than you can say for Hankerson at this point.

Redskins wide receiver competition — Leonard Hankerson appeared to have an edge in the battle for the wideout spot opposite Pierre Garcon, but Josh Morgan — after a week on the sideline – had a decent showing in the preseason opener.

Santana Moss looks like the favorite at slot receiver, and then a gang of young players find themselves battling for the final few spots on a crowded receiver corps. Anthony Armstrong (shoulder) is expected to return to action after missing the last week.

Meanwhile Brandon Banks aims to bounce back from a disappointing preseason debut, and Aldrick Robinson and Terrence Austin also aim to catch up.

It has been a solid training camp for Washington Redskins receiver Leonard Hankerson, a second-year pro who has been one of the team’s more consistent pass-catchers in practices.

While free-agent addition Josh Morgan has been plagued by a hamstring injury, Hankerson has made a strong bid thus far for a prominent role in the team’s receiver corps alongside Pierre Garcon and Santana Moss.

“It always can be a whole lot better,” Hankerson said Monday. “But I feel like I’m right there. I feel like I’m getting better. I feel like I’m doing what the coaches ask me. And I feel like I’m taking a step each and every day, and that’s what it’s all about.”

Washington Examiner beat writer John Keim talked about the Redskins WRs in a recent article:

There will be competition to start opposite Pierre Garcon among Santana Moss, Leonard Hankerson and Josh Morgan. But both Morgan and Hankerson are still on the mend giving Moss an edge. Morgan did practice in the spring, but lacked explosiveness.

Moss looked a little more spry in the spring, having lost 15 pounds. I’m not saying he’ll suddenly be making big plays downfield anymore, but he should show more burst than last season and get more YAC – with the number of short routes and smoke routes they send him on, leading to good yards after the catch, he should do much better than last year’s 4.1 YAC (he had 4.8 in 2010).

Fantasy Impact: 

We currently rank Garcon 33rd among WRs and Moss at 44th. Clearly, these are guys you can get in the mid-to-late part of the draft for depth. Of course, there are a lot of unknowns with rookie Robert Griffin III at QB, but the upside is there for someone to emerge.
