With just a handful of positions up for grabs entering training camp, Coach Jim Zorn has tabbed his starting right guard and his backup quarterback. While he still isn't certain who will be his No. 2 wide receiver, Friday night's game against the Patriots should yield the most clues to date.

While Devin Thomas began training camp with a slight edge over Malcolm Kelly, the consensus around Redskins Park is that Kelly is now the top candidate to line up opposite Santana Moss in the flanker spot.

At the beginning of training camp, Redskins HC Zorn acknowledged Devin Thomas was ahead of Malcolm Kelly in the competition for the starting flanker spot. After two preseason games, however, Kelly appears to have leaped over Thomas.

The other day, Zorn said both second-year wideouts and veteran Antwaan Randle el still are competing for the job. But Randle El is better suited to the slot-receiver role, so the battle to be the No. 2 wide receiver is between Thomas and Kelly.

Kelly has had impressive moments in each of the first two preseason games while Thomas has just kind of been on the field. And then there's rookie wideout Marko Mitchell, who was the offensive star of camp (rookie strong-side LB/DE Brian Orakpo had that distinction on defense) and scored the Redskins' first touchdown of the preseason.

Redskins back on the field after missing Saturday's scrimmage with nagging injuries were right tackles Mike Williams (groin) and Stephon Heyer (knee), defensive lineman J.D. Skolnitsky (hamstring), fullback Eddie Williams (knee) and receivers Devin Thomas (hamstring) and Malcolm Kelly (hamstring).

Redskins WR Santana Moss, Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas - 3 of the top WRs - sat out the scrimmage with hamstring injures. For Moss, it's a minor hiccup; he's a veteran who is having a great camp and knows how to manage the injury. It's another roadblock for Kelly and Thomas, who have combined to miss all or parts of 10 practices. Kelly has shown flashes when he has been on the field and Thomas has shown decent hands, but they must play in the preseason to have a chance to beat out Antwaan Randle el.
