Scouting report

ATL QB Marcus Mariota - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at Cincinnati Bengals

Is Marcus Mariota back? Week 6 perhaps may have been a turning point for him as he was nearly perfect throwing the football (13/14) and accounted for two touchdowns in the upset win over the 49ers. He was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week as a result. That was a tough task and now he faces another one as he heads to Cincinnati to face a strong Bengals defense that is among our top five toughest matchups for opposing quarterbacks. He has the mobility to add value in the run game, but he's still best served as a QB2 at best this week.

ATL QB Marcus Mariota - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. San Francisco 49ers

Sure, he didn't have Kyle Pitts or Cordarrelle Patterson, but it was yet another mundane fantasy outing for Marcus Mariota, salvaged by a passing touchdown and 61 rushing yards. Mariota now has three games with less than 200 passing yards and faces another top-tier defense in the 49ers this week. Even with byes starting this week, Mariota isn't worth much consideration, unless it's a deep Superflex league.

ATL QB Marcus Mariota - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Falcons won last week against the Browns despite just 139 yards and an interception for Marcus Mariota, who has been putting up pedestrian numbers of late. He has less than 230 passing yards in all four games and three games with less than two passing touchdowns. A date with Tampa Bay this week means the likelihood of Mariota coming up with a strong fantasy performance is pretty unlikely. Mariota also doesn't have Cordarrelle Patterson for at least four games. Mariota is a tough start this week in Tampa.

ATL QB Marcus Mariota - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Cleveland Browns

Through three weeks, the Atlanta Falcons actually look competitive. Credit Arthur Smith for having his team ready every week and once again seemingly overachieving, considering many felt the Falcons would be one of the worst teams this season. Marcus Mariota has been a reason for that. He has worked the offense well thus far and turned into a steady QB2 option. That should continue this week against the Browns, who actually rank 30th in our matchup ratings against quarterbacks. He may even have low-end QB1 potential this week. Sneaky DFS option.

ATL QB Marcus Mariota - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Seattle Seahawks

Marcus Mariota has been an average fantasy quarterback through two weeks. He did throw for two touchdowns against the Rams in an attempt to overcome the infamous Falcons deficit of 28-3, ultimately falling short. This week, he faces the Seahawks on the road. It would be really nice to see Kyle Pitts get more involved, but at least Drake London has kept his fantasy value afloat. He's a middling QB2 this week with average projections.

ATL QB Marcus Mariota - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Los Angeles Rams

Marcus Mariota was about what we expected in the passing game in Week 1 against the Saints, pretty average. He threw for 215 yards and didn't throw for a touchdown. A rushing touchdown and 72 yards on the ground boosted his fantasy output. Is that sustainable? Probably not against the Rams. Yes, they did allow over 50 rushing yards to Josh Allen in Week 1. However, Marcus Mariota isn't Josh Allen and the Rams are angry after being embarrassed at home in Week 1. Mariota is a low-end QB2 this week.

LV QB Marcus Mariota - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Miami Dolphins

Marcus Mariota took over for the injured Derek Carr last week against the Chargers, and he played admirably, despite the narrow loss. Mariota was 17 of 28 for 226 yards, a touchdown and a pick. He added 88 yards and a touchdown on the ground though, something he’s been able to do consistently throughout his career.

Mariota is expected to start this week, but it’s a tough matchup against the Dolphins, who rank fifth in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. Expect some flashy plays, but also some turnovers. He adds enough on the ground to make him worth considering as a flyer if you’re desperate, but we have him ranked as a lower-end QB2 option in most leagues.

Update: Carr sounds like he may start, but he's even less interesting than Mariota because he doesn't add anything rushing. Stay away from both Raiders quarterbacks this week.
