In an interview with 98.7 ESPN New York, Jets QB David Garrard fielded the following question:

Did the Jets assure you that you had a fair chance at being the starting quarterback?

“When I talked to everybody, I was given — without a doubt — the idea that I had every shot to be the starting quarterback. I took them at face value. I took them as genuine when they were telling me that. I didn’t think they were telling me the Jets were taking me in to help everybody else out. I felt like they were being very sincere."

Fantasy Impact: 

This is obviously bad news for Mark Sanchez, but neither player is even a fantasy QB2 given the current state of the Jets.

Jets WR Santonio Holmes' has agreed to a restructured contract and will remain with the team for the 2013 season.

Fantasy Impact: 

Given the Jets roster of WRs, Holmes is a sleeper WR5 who will likely be available late in fantasy drafts. If he can stay healthy, he should see a lot of targets from QB Mark Sanchez.

The New York Jets signed veteran quarterback David Garrard on Monday in hopes of bolstering their backup corps behind starter Mark Sanchez, the team announced.

Fantasy Impact: 

We wouldn't expect Garrard to challenge for the starting job, but it's not out of the question.

Don't be surprised if the Jets try to get WR Santonio Holmes to take a pay cut on his $11 million base salary -- an exhorbitant amount for a No. 2-quality receiver coming off a serious injury. Problem is, $7.5 million of the salary is guaranteed. If they cut him, they'd take an $11.25 million cap hit and they'd also have to pay him the $7.5 million.

However, unlike Mark Sanchez' guarantee, Holmes has an offset clause, meaning he can't double dip if he's released. In other words, his maxes out at $7.5 million in 2013 earnings if he's cut and signs elsewhere. Maybe, with financial motivation to stay a Jet, he'd be receptive to a restructured deal. New GM John Idzik is supposed to be a skilled negotiator; let's see if he can get Holmes to take a haircut.
