Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger, WR Markus Wheaton look to reconnect

Markus Wheaton and Ben Roethlisberger share lockers next to each other inside the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex locker room, and it's there that a bulk of the communication between the quarterback and receiver takes place.

Usually.

"He spent so much time in the training room that he couldn’t be next to me talking about things," Roethlisberger said on Monday.

Wheaton was out for most of training camp while dealing with an undisclosed injury, but returned to practice this week as the Steelers returned from St. Vincent to their team facility.

"I’m disappointed he was out of the practices because I felt like we had really grown a lot and the chemistry had grown a lot," Roethlisberger said. "Even if his locker is next to mine and just communicating to each other talking."

Fantasy Impact: 

Despite having nine less receptions than he had in 2014, Wheaton totaled 105 more yards (749), and averaged 4.8 more yards-per-catch (17.0) with five more touchdowns last season. He's also in the final year of his $2.8 million rookie contract. There is a lot riding on Wheaton this season, but right now, he's still in the process of playing catch-up. Wheaton is slotted as the team's WR2 this year, a potential vital role with no Martavis Bryant and an ailing TE in Ladarius Green.

Markus Wheaton unsure if he'll see time on outside

Fourth-year wide receiver Markus Wheaton likely must be more productive this year, considering big-play threat Martavis Bryant has was suspended for the season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Even though he likely will garner plenty of attention during training camp, Wheaton insisted he doesn't feel pressured. And he's not sure whether he'll remain as the slot receiver or move outside.

“Who knows how's it going to be without Martavis?” Wheaton said. “I talk with him every now and then just to check on him to see how he's doing, and he sounds positive, which is always good. Maybe I'll get more work outside with (Bryant) out. It's really hard to say right now.”

Fantasy Impact: 

The story went on to say quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will need someone to take the heat off All-Pro wide receiver Antonio Brown. Wheaton's workload hinges on how second-year player Sammie Coates develops and whether veteran Darrius Heyward-Bey can become an integral part of what could be one of the league's more explosive offenses.

Steelers beat writer Ed Bouchette was asked who would benefit the most from Martavis Bryant's absence. His reply: "Markus Wheaton is a starter, as he was when Martavis Bryant played. I would guess the one who should benefit most is Sammie Coates."

He added, "I have been told he worked like crazy this offseason and is in great shape. Also, the fact the coaches keep talking him up means they expect him to progress nicely."

Fantasy Impact: 

It's very possible that Coates "benefits the most" since he's being promoted from WR4 to WR3, so it's a big jump in playing time. We still believe that Wheaton is the second best fantasy receiver in Pittsburgh, however. His performance late last year indicated that he finally turned the corner. He caught 44 passes for 749 yards and five touchdowns on the season, but really came on down the stretch, averaging 4.7 catches for 79 yards and 0.67 TD (on 7.8 targets per game) over the final six games of the season. (He was the #12 fantasy receiver in that span.) Though he only gained 53 total receiving yards in two playoff games, he was targeted 13 times, so he was an integral part of the offense late in the year. Wheaton also fared well on a per target basis, finishing 22nd and 27th (out of 121 eligible receivers) in fantasy points per target in standard and PPR formats, respectively.

Steelers WR Martavis Bryant dropping appeal, will be suspended for the entire 2016 season

Steelers WR Martavis Bryant is dropping his appeal of his suspension. He's going to be suspended a year.

Bryant is eligible to apply for reinstatement no sooner than 60 days before 1-year anniversary of the suspension.

Consider Wheaton a fantasy WR3 with WR2 upside. The other players who stand to benefit are TE Ladarius Green (especially in the red zone) and deep threat Darrius Heyward-Bey.
