BAL WR Marlon Brown - Week 5, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 – Marlon Brown vs. Indianapolis
Marlon Brown had three catches for 31 yards last week as the Ravens destroyed the Carolina Panthers. Brown remains the third receiver for the Ravens, and while he has the prerequisite size to be a significant red zone target, we just haven’t seen it this season. Brown will gain value if the one of the Smiths in front of him gets hurt, but until then, he should remain on waivers.

BAL WR Marlon Brown - Week 4, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 – Marlon Brown vs. Carolina

Marlon Brown had 15 yards last week against the Browns, catching the only ball that was thrown his way. Brown is still vying for targets with a handful of other players, but seems to be the primary WR3 in the Ravens offense, which could lead to good things with TE Dennis Pitta now out for the rest of the season with a hip injury.

Still, until he shows something, Brown shouldn’t be rostered in fantasy leagues. The Ravens don’t have the kind of offense to support three (or even two) fantasy receivers week to week, and against the Panthers this week, there’s even less chance of a breakout performance. Leave him on waivers.

BAL WR Marlon Brown - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 – Marlon Brown vs. Cleveland
Marlon Brown finished the game against the Steelers without any catches and he remains buried on the depth chart in Baltimore. Until something changes and he starts logging enough snaps and targets to be counted on for fantasy numbers, he should remain on the waiver wire.

BAL WR Marlon Brown - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 – Marlon Brown vs. Pittsburgh
Marlon Brown didn’t do anything last week as the Ravens looked to Kamar Aiken instead in large sub packages. Brown has red zone ability and looked decent at times a year ago, but until he manages to find a role in the Ravens offense, there’s no reason to have him on your fantasy roster at this time.

BAL WR Marlon Brown - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Marlon Brown was a pleasant surprise for the Ravens last year as an undrafted rookie. He finished the season with 49 catches and 524 yards, but he also had seven touchdown receptions as he fought to maintain a spot as the WR2 in Baltimore. This year, he’ll be battling for the third spot on the depth chart with the addition of veteran Steve Smith from Carolina.

Fantasy Upside
Brown is a big target for quarterback Joe Flacco, standing 6’5, which helps explain why he caught seven touchdowns last season. He should be able to beat out Jacoby Jones for the WR3 spot, so he should manage to maintain a role in the Ravens offense, even if it will likely be smaller than what it was last year. Also, the Ravens offense was terrible last season, so upgrades on the offensive line and a new Offensive Coordinator in former Houston Head Coach Gary Kubiak should help the whole offense.

Fantasy Downside
Unfortunately, Brown isn’t likely to make it back to the starting lineup behind Torrey Smith and Steve Smith. He’ll likely remain a sub-package guy, might still get some red zone looks, and is not likely to see 81 targets again this season. Kubiak’s offense will also likely use two TE sets frequently, which may push his snaps and targets down even further. Brown also didn’t light the world on fire last season, despite playing in an offense that really needed someone to step up.

Bottom Line
Brown is worth noting, but not really worth drafting at this point. Unless something happens to one of the two players ahead of him on the depth chart, he’s unlikely to reproduce the numbers that he put up last season, and seven touchdowns seems like an anomaly if he doesn’t get back to the starting lineup.
