Titans QB Marcus Mariota breaks leg in Week 16

Quarterback Marcus Mariota is out and so are the Tennessee Titans.

Mariota broke his right leg in a 38-17 loss at Jacksonville on Saturday, a crushing setback for a team that had so many things go right while winning three in a row and seven of 10 previously.

''That breaks my heart, man,'' Titans offensive tackle Taylor Lewan said. ''Love him. That guy's an awesome dude. For that to happen to him, it's unfair.''

Fantasy Impact: 

A few hours later, the Titans (8-7) were eliminated from playoff contention when Houston beat Cincinnati to win the AFC South for the second straight season. Matt Cassel takes over for Week 17.

Mularkey: Dorial Green-Beckham needs to put in more work

Tennessee Titans coach Mike Mularkey continued to lament DGB's inconsistency after the Titans scrimmage Monday night. Green-Beckham turned a good pass from Matt Cassel into an interception.

How does a still-raw receiver such as Green-Beckham learn to not allow it to happen?

"That's spending extra time when nobody is watching," Mularkey said. "That's doing things when nobody is watching. That's in the classroom. I think it's just putting the work in without being directed by anybody. Doing it yourself."

I asked if Mularkey was suggesting DGB is not doing those things.

"I would do it more," he said. "I mean he does do it. I would do it more."

Fantasy Impact: 

The author went on to say he can't imagine a WR with the size and athleticism of DGB doesn't make the team, but he's going to have to start putting in the work and earning the trust of the coaches and quarterback. It appears rookie Tajae Sharpe and Rishard Matthews are running ahead of Green-Beckham, according to the story.

The Titans have agreed to terms with free-agent quarterback Matt Cassel, according to a source.

A 12-year veteran, the 33 year-old Cassel will provide depth and competition at the quarterback spot behind starter Marcus Mariota. Zach Mettenberger is currently the team’s second-string quarterback, but has been inconsistent in his opportunities and has yet to win a start.

Jerry Jones has made no secret that the Dallas Cowboys need to address their quarterback position behind Tony Romo.

They will have a few months to determine how they want to go about it after Brandon Weeden, Matt Cassel and Kellen Moore combined to go 1-11 in Romo’s absence.

But the owner and general manager liked what he saw from Moore, so much so that he believes Moore could be a viable No. 2 quarterback.

“His background and (offensive coordinator Scott Linehan’s) background with him and these games, I think he’s got the potential to be a winning (backup),” Jones said. “I think he can ultimately win games in the NFL.”

Moore completed 33-of-48 passes for 435 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday’s 34-23 loss to the Washington Redskins. In three games of action, Moore had four touchdowns and six interceptions.
