Maurice Jones-Drew expects to be cleared by summer

Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew had his operation on Dec. 28 and doesn’t expect to be cleared for football activity until early this summer.

But he expects to return to the form that won him the NFL rushing title in 2010 (1,606 yards); he was limited to six games and one touchdown this past year.

Jones-Drew revealed the injury was a “mid-foot fracture,” not the more serious Lisfranc break that was assumed by many but never confirmed since then coach Mike Mularkey would never elaborate.

“I did mess up some things, but it wasn’t what people thought it was,” Jones-Drew said.

In 2012, Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew made a play for a new contract. It didn’t work.

This year, he plans no such effort.

He told Adam Schein of SiriusXM NFL Radio that the veteran tailback who had most of his season marred by a foot injury will neither hold out nor even ask for a new contract.

“I went to them last year,” Jones-Drew said. “It didn’t work out. I’m not going to reach out to them because, you know, I just feel like I tried that last year [and] it didn’t work. If the Jaguars want to do a new deal I’m more than open to talk. I’m not going to say I don’t want to go there. I’ve grown up there. This is where I started. I want to win a championship there. That’s what I want to do."

Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew indicated Monday as the players said their goodbyes that he probably should have had the surgery sooner.

“I should have had it a little earlier than when I did but it’s just something that you learn from,’’ he said. “You’ve just got to keep going.’’

When asked if he regrets not getting the surgery earlier, he said, “It’s a part of the deal I guess. I tried to go. It just didn’t work and then finally enough was enough.’’

The possibility of having surgery immediately after the injury was an option, he said, “but at the time when we were talking about it, the thought was to let it heal a little bit and see how things go. Just waited a little too long at the end of the day.’’
