Scouting report

KC WR Mecole Hardman - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Houston Texans

After a bad Week 4, Mecole Hardman bounced back with a solid 4-79 off six targets in Week 5. Hardman's now had 60+ yards in three of the four games since Tyreek Hill's injury. It's not clear if Hill will return this week, so if he does, Hardman's ceiling will be somewhat limited. But if Hill remains out, and Sammy Watkins is also out, then Hardman could be a high reward flex play in a favorable matchup against the Texans. So keep an eye out for the Chiefs' injury report before making a decision on Hardman.

KC WR Mecole Hardman - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Indianapolis Colts

For the second game in a row, Mecole Hardman had just two receptions. Although the yardage totals in those two games were wildly different (97 vs. 9). Hardman has had at least five targets in every game since Tyreek Hill's injury and he's always one catch away from a huge day. He proved that in Week 2 and 3 with an 83-yard score and a 42-yard score. He should be viewed as a WR3 with a high ceiling and low floor in a decent matchup against the Colts in Week 5.

KC WR Mecole Hardman - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Detroit Lions

Mecole Hardman led the Chiefs in receiving yards last week, but that was mostly the result of one play: an 83-yard touchdown. Outside of that reception, Hardman had just one other catch, for 14 yards. He's a big-play receiver, but he hasn't quite taken over Tyreek Hill's production. He is, however, a good fantasy option moving forward as he can break a big play at any moment. And his five targets in Week 3 proves he's still getting enough looks to stay busy. We like him as a WR3 in a fine matchup against the Lions.

KC WR Mecole Hardman - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Baltimore Ravens

Mecole Hardman had a solid debut in his first NFL start, catching four of six targets for 61 yards and a touchdown. He also had a 74-yard touchdown get called back due to a holding call, so he nearly had a really huge day. Hardman should continue to fill in nicely in Tyreek Hill's absence. He gets a somewhat tough matchup against the Ravens this week, but we still like him as a WR3.

KC WR Mecole Hardman - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Oakland Raiders

Mecole Hardman was viewed by many fantasy analysts this offseason as Tyreek Hill's replacement assuming Hill faced league punishment for his off-field issues. Hill went unpunished by the league, but he'll now be sidelined with an injury, which opens the door for Hardman's success. Hardman played on 78 percent of the Chiefs' offensive snaps in Week 1, so he's clearly in line for more work even though he finished the game with no catches (just one target). With a full week of preparation, Hardman should get involved.

He has a high ceiling due to his speed (4.33 40-yard dash) and ability to break a big play, but don't get too excited. He should be viewed as a WR3 with risk. After all, he did finish with no catches last week. Hardman should be picked off waivers, but it's hard to rank him too high since we haven't seen him in a fully prepared game yet.

KC WR Mecole Hardman - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Jacksonville Jaguars

The Chiefs drafted Mecole Hardman in the second round of this year's draft. He's a nice deep threat option who may have had a larger role if Tyreek Hill was suspended. We expect Hardman to make a few plays throughout the season, but nothing that should make you trust him on a weekly basis. He holds little fantasy relevance.

KC WR Mecole Hardman - 2019 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Mecole Hardman ran a 4.33 40-yard dash time at the NFL Combine, which was the third-fastest at his position and fifth-fastest overall. He averaged 16 yards per catch at Georgia, making him a great deep-field threat. Before the league decided to not punish Tyreek Hill, many viewed Hardman as a potential Hill replacement.

Fantasy Downside
Hardman was a really interesting option before the news came down about Hill not being suspended. As a rookie, he had a chance to step in and become the deep threat option the Chiefs would have been lacking. Instead, he’s now buried behind Hill, Sammy Watkins and Travis Kelce in the pecking order of receivers.

2019 Bottom Line
If something happens to Hill this season, then Hardman would be worth a speculative pickup. But as of now, it’s hard to see him getting enough targets on a weekly basis to warrant fantasy consideration. He’ll likely make a few big plays here and there, but overall he doesn’t bring much to the table in 2019.
