ARI WR Michael Floyd - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 – Michael Floyd vs. San Francisco

Michael Floyd had a terrible time with the backup quarterback in against the Giants in Week 2. He finished with only one reception and 19 yards after a great first game, and things are looking sketchy for Carson Palmer heading into a Week 3 matchup against the 49ers.

Floyd is the most talented receiver in Arizona right now, and he should be better than he was against the Giants, but he’s a risky start against a good 49ers defense and with Drew Stanton still likely to be the one throwing the ball. Where Floyd would normally be considered a WR2, he’s more of a WR3 this week.

ARI WR Michael Floyd - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 – Michael Floyd vs. New York Giants

Michael Floyd started out very solid in Week 1 with five receptions and 119 yards as the go-to receiver in the Cardinals offense against the Chargers. Arizona pulled out a win, and Floyd demonstrated some skills, catching a 63 yard bomb early in the game, and making key receptions throughout the tight contest.

This week, Floyd will face a Giants team that was completely destroyed by the Lions passing game last week, and free agent corner Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie was abused by Calvin Johnson. While Floyd is not Megatron, he should fare well against the Giants and the Cardinals should continue to throw the ball in his direction. We have him ranked as a solid WR2 this week and he should be active in all formats.

ARI WR Michael Floyd - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 – Michael Floyd vs. San Diego
Michael Floyd broke out last season with over 1,000 yards receiving, but nobody noticed because he only had five scores and did most of his best work during the second half of the season, including an 11 catch, 193 yard outburst against the Jaguars.

Floyd faces a vulnerable Charger pass defense in Week 1. San Diego was 28th in the league last year against the pass, and their offense is good enough to keep the Cardinals passing all game. We expect Floyd to have an even better 2014 than he did in 2013, and he’s a solid WR2 in most leagues to start the season.

ARI WR Michael Floyd - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Floyd posted his first 1,000-yard receiving season of his career in 2013. Entering his third season, it appears the tutelage under Larry Fitzgerald is paying off. "The way Mike Floyd is playing just jumped out at me," QB Carson Palmer said this offseason. "I have very high expectations for Mike this year." Fantasy owners should share in those expectations. Floyd surged down the stretch last season, aiding the Cardinals' late run toward the playoffs, which fell just short. He went for 90-plus yards in four of Arizona's final eight games. After a full season in coach Bruce Arians' system, the 24-year-old Floyd believes his duo with Fitzgerald could give cornerbacks fits. "If they double-team anyone, we have the guys on the field that can beat one-on-one coverage," Floyd said.

Fantasy Downside
Palmer's week-to-week and season-long consistency might be the only real concern here. But as NFL.com recently suggested, with Palmer being the linchpin to the Cardinals' success, Floyd making another leap in production would go a long way to keeping that pin in place.

Bottom Line
Wondering how Floyd will stack up against Fitzgerald? Bleacher Report's Dan Pompei wrote the following after a recent visit to Arizona: "Floyd is in for a big year. Some people in camp think he'll be their No. 1 WR. ..." That would be a significant development. That said, it wouldn't be shocking -- especially with Fitzgerald aging and possibly heading into his final season as a Cardinal. Of course, fantasy owners might contend that a competitive situation between the two would be the best thing possible. Either way, Floyd looks like a solid value.
